Bonfire Night is celebrated in Britain on November 5th to commemorate the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when a group of provincial English Catholics led by Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the British Parliament and murder King James I with explosives placed in the building's basement. Guy Fawkes was a Catholic conspirator who belonged to the group behind the failed Gunpowder Plot assassination attempt.
