Nella Larsen was born in 1891 in Chicago. She attended Fisk University and graduated from the New York Public Library School, becoming the first black woman to do so. Larsen worked as a nurse and librarian before publishing her novels Quicksand in 1928 and Passing in 1929. Both novels dealt with themes of racial ambiguity and passing. Larsen received the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1930, becoming one of the first women of color to win the award. - 2.  Zora Neale Hurston was born in Notalsuga, Alabama on January 7, 1891.  Her parents were John Hurston and Lucy Ann Hurston. They have eight children.  At three, the family moved to Eatonville, Florida.  In 1901, she discovered an interest in literature.  In 1904, her mother died and her father immediately was remarried to Matte Morge.
- 3.  As a teen, she was sent away to boarding school until her parents no longer paid her tuition.  In 1917, she began attending Morgan Academy and graduated the next year.  In 1918, she attended Howard University for undergraduate studies.  In 1925, she received a scholarship to Barnard College where she was the only black student.  She received her B.A. in anthropology in 1927 at 36 years old.
- 5.  In 1927, Hurston married Herbert Sheen, a former classmate and jazz musician. They divorced in 1931.  In 1939, she married Albert Price, a coworker. She was 48, he was 23.
