Building An Awesome Company Culture with WordPress

Editor's Notes

  1. This is not a one-way speech, but a two way presentation. This is my first WordCamp talk. Im here to share with everyone, and learn from everyone as much as you are. Yesterday I had lunch with Devin, and Devin mentioned Give and take. We give first, then we take. So here I am, I share with you, and I learn from you. Good Luck; Have Fun!

  3. Questions: How many of you use wordpress to run a personal website or personal blog? How many of you use wordpress for your company website or business website? How many of you use wordpress to power your own company intranet and company internal operation, used by your employees?
  4. This is the reason why Im here today, to show you how you can use WordPress to power your own internal company operation and build an awesome company culture.
  5. But what is awesome company culture? Catered lunch to get employees together? Pretty good. Guaranteed bonus? Quarterly bonus payout? But those are employee perks and benefits. Not culture. Awesome is subjective. And Im here to share the culture in Automattic. I think its awesome.
  6. When we talk about culture in Automattic, we have to talk about the Automattic creed. This is what defines an Automattician. Every Automattician is expected to embody the Automattic creed. Why do we have this creed? Automattic is a fully distributed remote company. We do not have an office. This creed is what brings us together. Never stop learning, I wont just work on things that are assigned to me., I will never pass up an opportunity to help out a colleague, Open Source is one of the most powerful ideas of our generation, I will communicate as much as possible, because its the oxygen of a distributed company. , I am in a marathon, not a sprint, and no matter how far away the goal is, the only way to get there is by putting one foot in front of another every day. Given time, there is no problem thats insurmountable. What do you think about this creed? Do you like it? Thats what a lot of people think too. Thats how we get to number 20 in the global most loved workplace ranking.
  7. 70% in P2, 25% in private chat rooms, the rest on Slack. 0% in emails. 0% in whatsapp. The problem with emails and whatsapp is that they create information silos.
  8. Mention of P2.
  9. Here, start talking about WordPress and company culture. And when we talk about Automattic company culture, we have to talk about Automattic creed. We keep talking about Automattic culture, Automattic culture, Automattic culture. What is Automattic culture? It all boils down to the Automattic creed.
