4. Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
Geoscience and Remote Sensing
Society: IEEE GRSS
What is GRSS
One of 38 Societies of IEEE
Global: 3400 Members in 94 Countries
What does it do
Research in Remote Sensing and
Geospatial Information
Science, Engineering, Applications,
Education
5. Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
Vision
To be the leading society in science,
engineering, applications, and education
for the remote sensing and geospatial
information community.
8. Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
Types of Remote Sensing
1. Passive Remote Sensing- Remote sensing of energy naturally
reflected or radiated from the terrain. Optical Remote Sensing is an
example.
2. Active Remote Sensing- Remote sensing methods that
provide their own source of electromagnetic radiation toilluminate the
terrain. Radar Remote Sensing is one example.
9. Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society
Types of Resolutions in Remote Sensing
1. Spatial resolution -The smallest spatial measurement.
2. Temporal resolution- Frequency of measurement.
3. Spectral resolution -The number of independent channels.
4. Radiometric resolution -The sensitivity of the detectors.
Depends on the satellite orbit configuration and sensor design.
Resolutions are different for different sensors
Remote Sensing Tradeoff
It is very difficult to obtain extremely high spectral, spatial,
temporal and radiometric resolutions at the same time.

GRSS Student Grand Challenge
1. The student team from Universitat Polit竪cnica de Catalunya, Spain,
proposed developing a combination of payloads for CubeSats
(https://www.cubesat.org/). These include an L-band radiometer for
monitoring ice thickness and soil moisture, a multispectral camera for
monitoring vegetation, and a software defined radio for monitoring
Radio Frequency Interference along with a deployable antenna system.
2. The student team from Telkom University, Indonesia proposed
development of a multispectral camera and a miniature spectrometer
for atmospheric sensing.
