Cambodia Trip Summary

During January 2011, a team of 7 volunteers from St John Volunteer First Aiders attended a joint health project with Antipodeans Abroad in Siem Reap, Cambodia. They ran workshops on oral hygiene, hand washing, basic hygiene, nutrition, manual handling, kitchen safety, and first aid. Over the 3 weeks, they taught over 1,000 people and distributed toothbrushes, toothpaste, books, whiteboards, posters, charts, flyers, sports equipment, and water filtration systems to schools in and around Siem Reap. The volunteers enjoyed gaining experience and skills on the worthwhile trip.

The St John Ambulance WA has launched a new partnership trial with Surf Life Saving WA to station first responders at popular beaches. The trial will run from January to April 2011 at several beaches along the WA coast. Having trained first responders nearby who can respond quickly to cardiac emergencies could significantly improve survival rates, as the first 10 minutes after a cardiac arrest are critical. The responders will have automated external defibrillators to provide emergency treatment until an ambulance arrives. Acquired Cataract Brief Description
An acquired cataract is an opacity or clouding of the lens of the eye that develops after birth, leading to progressive visual impairment. It is the most common cause of reversible blindness worldwide, especially in the elderly.
Types of Acquired Cataracts:
1. Senile Cataract Most common type, related to aging; classified as:
Nuclear sclerosis (yellowing and hardening of the lens nucleus)
Cortical cataract (spoke-like opacities in the cortex)
Posterior subcapsular cataract (opacity at the back of the lens, affects near vision)
2. Traumatic Cataract Caused by blunt or penetrating eye injuries.
3. Metabolic Cataract Seen in systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus (snowflake cataract).
4. Drug-induced Cataract Prolonged use of steroids or chlorpromazine.
5. Radiation Cataract Due to exposure to UV rays or ionizing radiation.
Clinical Features:
Gradual, painless decrease in vision
Glare or difficulty in bright light
Faded colors, halos around lights
Myopic shift (second sight)
Management:
Definitive treatment is surgical removal of the cloudy lens and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation (usually by phacoemulsification).

Cambodia Trip Summary
- 1. From January 8th-29th 2011 a team of 7 St John Volunteer First Aiders attended a joint project with Antipodeans Abroad based in Siem Reap, Cambodia. During our time we ran different health workshops which included; oral hygiene, hand washing, basic hygiene, nutrition, manual handling, kitchen safety and a series of first aid sessions in burns, fractures, snake bites, wound care and bleeds. We visited several additional schools in and around Siem Reap during our time. During this time we taught over 1 000 staff, students and community members.

In the course of three weeks we distributed over 350 toothbrushes and toothpastes, books, beginners English books, whiteboards, poster, charts, flyers, sports equipment and several water filtration systems for the water pumps. Thanks to the Australian Youth Council for their hard work and organisation of this project. Thank you to all VFAS members who supported me, it was truly appreciated. Everyone on the trip thoroughly enjoyed the experience and skills in which we gained. The trip was truly a worthwhile trip and I would recom- mend it to anyone and everyone. From Aaron del Pino
