The Canary Islands' economy was traditionally based on single-crop cultivation like sugar cane, cochineal, and bananas. As a stopping point for Spanish conquerors, trade brought great prosperity. The UK later influenced the economy through coal refuel stations and banana exports from Fyffes, and introduced utilities. Today, British firms export over £200 million worth of goods annually to the Canaries, primarily food, alcohol, and light machinery and metal goods.
