Captain Nobody – Dean Pitchford
Based on the novel that you have studied, write about a value that is important to one
of the characters in the story.Give reasons why it is so, with close reference to the
text. (15 m)
I have read and analysed the novel Captain Nobody written by Dean
Pitchford. There is a value which is important to the main character, Newton
Newman in the story and the value is bravery. Newton Newman, also known as
Newt, is a boy who went through the process of self discovery in being Captain
Nobody. He had always been overshadowed by his brother – Chris Newman’s
achievements in playing American football but through his courageous acts, he had
helped a lot of people.
Through the value of bravery, Newt had started to become confident in
himself. Newt had become brave andconfident in handling emergency situations.
This is shown when his friend, Cecil Butterworth called him for his help to get a big
bass drum from the top of a dumpster. Initially, Newt was reluctant because the bass
drum was quite high up. However, with Cecil motivating him and Newt telling
himself to be brave and do it, Newt managed to retrieve the big bass drum at last.
This shows that the value of bravery has taught Newt to become confident in himself
and he could really do it if he believed in himself that he could do it. In my opinion,
this is indeed the turning point in Newt’s self value where he started to have
confidence in himself.
Through the value of bravery, Newt also managed to end the rivalry
between two schools and gained new friendships for himself. Newt had helped to
clear the false accusation on Reggie Ratner who was innocent and did not do the
Big Tackle. This is shown when the people of the town were informed that Reggie
Ratner wanted to kill himself at the Appleton water tower because of the accusation.
Newt, feeling that it is necessary to tell Reggie Ratner the truth, quickly rushed to the
water tower to save him. Although the ladder was not stable, Newt tried to be
courageous by climbing it and told Reggie Ratner the truth at the top of the water
tower. Reggie Ratner was not expecting it as at first, he was there to vandalise the
water tank but his shoe got stuck in the process. After the incident, people knew the
truth about Reggie Ratner and did not bother him anymore. After knowing the truth,
students from Fillmore High School and Merrimac High were no longer on bad
terms and Reggie Ratner became friends with Newt. From here, we can see how
Newt’s bravery in helping Reggie Ratner could bring peace to both high schools’
rivalry and he even gained a new friendship for himself. In my opinion, this is where
people started to value Newt’s kindness and all of these began with Newt being brave
in saving Reggie Ratner.
Lastly, through the value of bravery, Newt had managed to avoid being
bullied. This is because Newt stood up to the bullies, namely Ricky Ratner and
his friends and he did not succumb to their threat. When Newt was with Cecil and
JJ, Ricky and his friends came to Newt and started to scare him off. Newt was not
adversely affected by this incident. Instead, he told Ricky to back off. The grade four
students also came and backed Newt up. Due to Ricky’s action, Ferocious the Ferret
was out of its cage and Newt, JJ and Cecil had to run after it to catch it. Newt
showed his courage again when he heroically stopped the cars on the busy highway
to catch the ferret and without him noticing it, he saved the passengers of an airplane
that did an emergency landing on the highway. In my opinion, Newt had developed
his self-strength without him realising it by being brave and standing up for himself.
In conclusion, Newt had demonstrated to us that if we are brave enough, we
can achieve anything in life. Despite facing various obstacles and challenges, he
never let them affect him and he even became braver in the process of overcoming
the obstacles. So, we should do the same and let positive values become our self-
strength like what Newt did.
