So what are they?
Carbohydrates remain part of a healthy diet
for kids and adults despite the claims of being
the cause of obesity.
There are two major forms of carbohydrates:
Simple Sugars
Starches (complex)
Good vs. Bad

Processing Carbohydrates
The body breaks down all carbohydrates into
simple sugars.

Editor's Notes
#2: Simple sugars (or simple carbohydrates) consist of fructose, glucose, and lactose, and are also found in fruits.
Bad carbohydrates are refined sugars like candy and soda; refined grains such as white flour and white rice and are presumed a major cause of obesity in the United States.
Starches (or complex carbohydrates) can be found in foods like starchy vegetables, grains, rice, and breads and cereals.
#5: All carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars. They are then absorbed into the bloodstream.
Bad carbohydrates are broken down quickly which causes the blood sugar levels to rise quickly. Foods that allow the blood sugar levels to rise quickly can cause health problems such as diabetes and heart disease.
#6: The sugar level rises and the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone needed to move sugar from the blood into the cells, which is where it can be used as energy.
Complex carbohydrates are broken down more slowly which allows the blood sugar levels to rise gradually.
#7: Just to name a few health problems that can be cause d by bad, or too much, carbohydrates.
Diabetes is the bodys inability to produce and/or use insulin. It can be caused by the rapid rise in blood sugar levels over a period of time.
Diabetes is treated with insulin injections which provides the hormone necessary to help move the sugars from the blood to the cells.
The blood glucose level in the blood must be controlled or complications may arise and require treatment (ADA, 1995-2010).
#8: The sugar level rises and the pancreas releases insulin, a hormone needed to move sugar from the blood into the cells, which is where it can be used as energy.
Complex carbohydrates are broken down more slowly which allows the blood sugar levels to rise gradually.
These are considered to be good carbohydrates.
The key is to eat the majority of carbs from good sources and limit the amount of added sugar (The Nemours Foundation, 1995-2010).
#9: We cannot live without carbohydrates in our diets so get used to it; they are here to stay.
