This document describes how usability testing techniques like card sorting and prototyping can be conducted using PowerPoint rather than specialized software. Graduate students used PowerPoint to perform a card sorting task with 33 participants to help redesign a university website. They analyzed the results to identify common categories. Students then created a interactive prototype in PowerPoint and tested it with 6 users. The prototype revealed usability issues like small clickable areas that may have been missed with a paper prototype. In summary, PowerPoint provides a low-cost way to conduct basic usability activities and identify issues early in the design process.
This document describes how PowerPoint can be used as a tool for website usability testing and analysis. It details three case studies using PowerPoint to conduct card sorting, create an interactive prototype, and perform user testing of a college website redesign. For card sorting, PowerPoint was used to email content pages to participants and analyze results. An interactive prototype was built to test navigation scenarios. User testing measured completion times, errors and satisfaction ratings. Findings revealed navigation issues and provided insights not found with paper prototypes. The document argues PowerPoint is a viable hybrid solution that is low-cost, easy to use and allows for remote testing.
