Career planning is a process of systematically matching career goals and individual capabilities with opportunities for their fulfillment.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CAREER PLANNING It is an ongoing process It develops and shares a personal life career diagrams/timeline It defines career, abilities and interests of employees It describes the various roles an individual may have as part of his career and org It helps individual to develop skills required to fulfill different career roles, within or outside an org It strengthens work-related activities in the org It charts out professional directions as they relate to career goals.
OBJECTIVES OF CAREER PLANNING To develop an awareness of each employees uniquessness. To identify positive characteristics about employees, which can used for organizational development To identify personal qualities and events that has influenced employees self-concepts. To identify personal interests, abilities, strengths and weaknesses and how they relate to careers. To attract, engage and retain talented professionals in the org To create healthy ways of dealing with conflicts, stress, and emotions in self and others.
BENEFITS OF CAREER PLANNING Career planning develops promotable employees.  Career planning reduces employee turnover. Career planning encourages employees growth and development. Career planning reduces hoarding.  Career planning will ensure that senior management will become aware of the interests, skills and qualifications of employees who would have better chances of moving upwards.
