Careers in Space Webinar
27 May 2020
Presentation by Remco Timmermans
What business universities told students about career planning in the
Planning horizon
What a career really looks like…Planning horizon
My career observations
? It matters less WHAT diplomas you have, as long as you have them
? Your job probably did not yet EXIST when you were in school
? Knowledge from your education LOSES 30% of its use every year
? It’s NEVER too late to change a career that doesn’t make you happy
? The magic happens outside your comfort zone – just DO IT
? FUN is the most underrated career objective
? Your career should be about what makes you HAPPY
? If you do what you love, you WON’T WORK a single day in your life
Careers in Space
? I came for the rockets, I stayed for the PEOPLE
? Space is all about PASSION (less about money)
? Space is one of the most INTERNATIONAL and
interdisciplinary industries in the world
? Space is NOT (just) rocket science
? Space will need THOUSANDS of new people in the next
decade
? Space needs people from ALL backgrounds and countries
?There is a place in space for EVERYONE
Career tips for joining the space industry
? Build a space network early:
Join SEDS, SGAC (Space Generation Advisory Council), Women in Aerospace, etc.
? Get in touch with space workers:
Lots of nice people who want to talk to you. Find your mentor!
? Number of countries active in space is growing:
No space companies in your country? Help build them!
? Some niche specialisations in space:
Space Law, Space/STEM comms, Space Data Science, Space Medicine, Space Art
? Attend space events near you (webinars!):
See spaceagenda.com for everything going on
? Transitioning from another industry?
Go back to school and combine your experience with new space knowledge! ISU did it for me: www.isunet.edu
? Hackathons are a great entry point for non-space professionals:
See Copernicus Hackathons, NASA Space Apps Challenge, Act In Space, COVID Challenges
? Have your own idea for a new business in space?
There is a LOT of support at space incubators (e.g. ESA BIC) and competitions (e.g. Copernicus/Galileo Masters)
? Volunteer in Space and STEM organisations – Make your CV a SPACE CV:
World Space Week, BIS, SpaceUp, STEM Ambassadors, SEDS, SGAC, Solar System Ambassadors,
Model rocketry clubs, astronomy clubs
ThankYou!
