ABSTRACT
Water is a transparent and nearly colorless chemical substance that is the main
constituent of Earth's streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living
organisms. Its chemical formula is H2O, meaning that each of its molecules contains
one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms that are connected by covalent bonds.
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans,
aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs
when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without
adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
On the December,2017 we went with our batch fellows and Najmun Nahar mam to
Dhanmondi Lake to analyze the quality of water by receiving peoples opinion on the
causes, effects, impacts and the solution. We receive their data and analyze it to make a
good result which will be helpful to maintain the quality of water and to concern the
authority and local people.

Dhanmondi Lake is a lake located in the Dhanmondi residential area in Dhaka,Bangladesh. The
lake was originally a dead channel of the Karwan Bazar River, and was connected to the Turag
River. The lake is partially connected with the Begunbari Canal. In 1956, Dhanmondi was
developed as a residential area. In the development plan, Dhanmondi residential area was
developed in 1956 with 240.74 ha of land including the lake. about 16% of the total area of
Dhanmondi was designated for the lake.
It is 3 km in length, 35-100m in width, with a maximum depth of 4.77m and the total area of the
water body is 37.37 ha. There is one box culvert in the lake near Sukrabad area, which is the only
outlet of the lake. Excess floodwater due to heavy rainfall passes through this outlet. So water
level in the lake remains almost the same in all Seasons.
The lake is under the management of several authorities looking after its various aspects. The
Ministry of Works has its ownership; the Fisheries Department looks after fishery development;
the Dhaka City Corporation, being the principal civic body, exercises some responsibility in its
improvement. The Department of Environment (DOE) looks after the aspects of proper
Environment and protection of aquatic resources of the lake.

Previous Studies :
In 2013 A report submitted by Tapon Chakrabarti(Site Engineer at Apex Properties Development Limited)
anmed Dhanmondi lake water Pollution source investigation Report-2013Where he said
that The lake is being polluted through all the way of pollution except industrial man made pollution &
natural acid rain, Silt discharge from river & leachate from animal excreta . So its very necessary to
check the current rate of pollution, otherwise it would be able to take a place in history.
In a report of Ahmed Kabir on Dhanmondi lake contaminated by mysterious toxic waste DoE
s Senior Chemist, Syed Ahmed Kabir said There is no doubt the toxic wastewater is entering
this part of the lake but nobody is sure where it comes from,
A project held by dept. of zoology,Dhaka University(Prod. Dr. M. Niamul Naaser) where it said
that the Quality of Dhanmondi lake water is maintained local community by blocking pollution
sources.Ecologically the presence of fresh water mussels continuous filtering of water
Dhanmondi Lake keeps the water clean.

Methodology :
To achieve the above objectives the following methodologies were taken
a. Field visit to see the situation of the site.
b. Collect the opinion from the local people and the visitors of dhanmondi lake.
c. Overview the whole data.
Data and information are collected from both primary and secondary sources.
We analyze our data table and identify the problems, suggest some recommendation for
mitigate those problems and finally preparing the report.

Discussion on Data Table
Sources of pollution :
If we look at the data table we can see that the majority of the people say that falling leaves is a
major cause of water pollution. In general it a common facts and its natural and not harmful for
the water if excessive deposit of leaves dont occur.
Most of the people also told us waste deposit, polythene, bottle materials, papers, cigarette are
also the sources of pollution in Dhanmondi Lake water.
Effects of pollution:
In the effects of pollution majority of the people told us that the water of Dhanmondi lake is
unsuitable for us.Other side majority of the people also said that by increasing mosquitoes is also
a effects of water pollution in that area. Bad smell is also a effects of water pollution in
Dhanmondi Lake area. But in my eyes I could not find bad smell at all.I think there are some
specific places for bad smell mainly where the waste material thrown . Increased of toxic
chemical is also a effects of water pollution came to our data sheet.which can be identify by
testing the water sample in lab. People say that water pollution makes the aquatic life unsuitable.
But we see fishes in the lake, because of the size of the lake and the water it holds,it doesnt
hamper the aquatic life in broad .but in future if the water pollution continue ,it can be a cause of
threat for aquatic life.People also say that birds and animals are also reducing because of water
pollution .
Solution :
So what can be the solution of the water pollution problem of dhanmondi lake .
I will discuss them by public opinion .
The majority of the people think that public awareness can solve the matter.beside this the guards
who are appointed in Dhanmondi Lake ,they have play a vital role in this, they should keep their
eyes to keep the law and rules in Dhanmondi Lake .Implant tress are also come in public
opinion.
Preventing harmful discharge and Controlling surface run-off is also solutions for reducing water
pollution in Dhanmondi Lake .
14 | P a g e
Conclusion and Recommendation
Actually for maintaining ecological balance of Dhanmondi lake along with its natural view we have to
stop the external and internal pollution. It plays a vital role in Dhaka city as the city has over 14
million(2013) but hasnt sufficient number of water contents like lakes ,rivers, canals .
So finally we can say if we can aware people on throwing waste material, apply proper law on the area
the mitigation of pollution on Dhanmondi lake can be seen.
In the other hand pollution level of the water can be decrease by cultivating filter feeder fishes, regular
cleaning of water, maintaining the water level .
