Cell division occurs through mitosis and cytokinesis so that cells can grow in size and replicate damaged cells. Mitosis involves prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase where the genetic material (DNA) is copied and distributed equally between two daughter cells. Most of the cell cycle is spent in interphase where cells grow in size and replicate their DNA in preparation for cell division.
