(CERDEC) and Army sponsored Educational Outreach Programs Summary
CERDEC Math and Science Summer Camp Program
http://www.cerdec.army.mil/outreach/math_science_camp.asp – an intensive one-week academic program
providing students with hands-on learning in the areas of engineering, sensors, robotics, material science, electronics
& circuits, and flight, rocketry and satellites. (Grades 5-11)
E-CYBERMISSION http://www.ecybermission.com/ - a free, web-based science, math, and technology competition for
students. (Grades 6 -9)
Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS)– http://www.jshs.org - a three-day Science Fair and Expo designed
to give students an opportunity to demonstrate original research while encouraging those students not yet involved
in the STEM areas to engage. CERDEC Serves as the APG wide action officer for this event and coordinates
participation from all Garrison Supported Organizations to include technology demos, judges, workshop presenters
and panel members.
FIRST- http://www.usfirst.org/ - a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity that designs accessible, innovative programs
that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and
math. The annual programs culminate in an international robotics competition and celebration. (Grades K-12)
Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA)- one day K-12 STEM competition/event at Morgan State
University where students compete to advance to state and national level competitions in STEM subject areas.
(Grades K-12)
Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP) - http://seap.asee.org/ - SEAP students spend 8 weeks in a
CERDEC lab where they complete a piece of original research under the guidance of an experienced scientist or
engineer. This is a paid apprenticeship for the student. (Grades 11-12)
Junior Engineering Technical Society UNITE program (UNITE-JETS-TSA)- http://www.jets.org/programs/unite.cfm
-targets talented high school students and helps prepare them for college through summer programs that closely
parallel the academic experiences of a first year student in a university program. The Technology Student Association
offers HS teams competition opportunities at the state and national level.
Science and Engineering Apprentice Program- College Qualified Leader (SEAP- CQL) – http://seap.asee.org/ - a
continuation of the High School level SEAP program. Open to students who have completed their first or second year
of college, SEAP- CQL students spend 8 weeks in a CERDEC lab where they complete a piece of original research under
the guidance of an experienced scientist or engineer. This is a paid apprenticeship for the student. The goal of this
program is to enable the engineers to identify highly skilled students and transition them to long-term programs such
as the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP).
Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship Program –
http://www.asee.org/fellowships/smart/ - a scholarship for service program for students at the undergraduate
through doctoral level of study. Accepted SMART scholars receive full tuition as well as a paid summer internship
within their sponsoring lab. With SMART, for every year that the DoD pays for your school, you owe one year as a DoD
civilian employee.

County Events
Bel Air High School Career Night – a one evening event at Bel Air High School to provide students information about
opportunities in STEM outreach and career paths. (Grades 9-12)
Futures 11- a one-day STEM event at Harford Community College for local schools to provide students information
about opportunities in STEM outreach and career paths. (Grade 11)
Cecil County STEM Rally- an annual Cecil County event for all STEM students to introduce them to local professionals,
pair them with mentors and encourage continued STEM participation. (Grades 11-12)
Technology Needs Teens – a one day technology expo for Harford County 8th graders to introduce them to key STEM
fields and provide hands-on technology demonstrations. (Grade 8)

Opportunities for Classes, Community Groups and Schools

School Visits/ Mobile Technology Demonstrations- CERDEC engineers and scientists provide hands on
demonstrations and lectures about various engineering fields to promote STEM involvement and Outreach
Opportunities by traveling to local schools. (Grades K-12)
Lab Tours are provided to students from local schools to give them a hands-on, behind the scenes view of real world
engineering and emerging technologies. (Grades 6-12)
In school workshops can be created for students on a variety of topics including STEM involvement, communication
skills and computer mediated communication (Grades K-12)
Mentors can be provided to work either with individual students or STEM teams within your school. These
are members of our professional staff who will work with students on research and capstone projects,
STEM competition teams and any other activity that would require a STEM.
National Science Center (NSC) - http://www.nscdiscovery.org/ -Fort Discovery, NSC headquarters, is located on the
scenic Riverwalk in downtown Augusta. Math and science come alive with 250 hands on exhibits. The website offers
numerous children’s activities and teacher tools.
eCYBERMISSION Workshops are available to introduce the eCYBERMISSION program to your school, to explain the
participation criteria and to get your students involved in this highly recognized national competition. (Grades 6-9)
S.T.E.M. Superstar Innovation Road Show is a K-5 program that provides classes with grade level appropriate
mission challenges that encourage students to use teamwork and imagination to create and explain prototypes of
their ideas. Students learn the problem solving steps all engineers follow and how much fun the process can be.
