Buyiswa at the National African Language Resource Center, Univ of Wisconsin, Madison, May 2009 This was at a certification ceremony after our two-week intensive training as teachers of African languages as foreign languages in the U.S. My dress is a modernized replica of traditional isiXhosa wear. Fashion has brought about many modifications to the former traditional wear. The color red was the peoples typical color. In todays terms it would, perhaps, have been called the national colour. AmaXhosa (i.e. isiXhosa speaking people) used to be called the red people. I guess some of us are still sentimentally attached to it as one of the symbols of our identity. Currently I teach isiXhosa to UF students. Language enthusiasts are welcome to my classes.
I come from South Africa. I was born and bred in the Province of the Eastern Cape. My youngest sister and family live in the city of East London on the Indian Ocean, as shown on the map. South African Flag South African Map

Editor's Notes

  • #2: I was presenting a word game of the clicks of my language at the closing function of the training of teachers of African languages as foreign languages, at NALRC.
  • #3: South Africa is called the Rainbow Nation, to acknowledge our diversity and reflect our attitude of unity in diversity. Neighbor countries are Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland.
  • #4: My alma mater, where I had my first university qualifications and, later, career in language teaching and Lexicography.
  • #5: Great is Thy faithfulness, oh Lord.
  • #6: Standing on each side of me are my Summer Cooperative African Language Institute (SCALI) students, at Michigan State University. A third one is taking us the photo. We all had a happy and successful time.
  • #7: Enkosi [eh-nkoh-see] = thank you
