Letters have an easy to recognize predictable format including a date, salutation, message, closing, and signature. They address the reader to establish a relationship and engage them in ongoing interaction, often calling for a response. As the most personal form of writing, letters allow writers to directly speak to the recipient without interruption and once sent the message cannot be taken back.
