Magnesium reacts with oxygen gas to form magnesium oxide. This chemical reaction can be represented with a word equation using the names of the reactants and products or a balanced chemical equation showing the relative quantities. A word equation for the combustion of methane with oxygen would show methane and oxygen reacting to form carbon dioxide and water, and a balanced chemical equation ensures the total mass is equal on both sides of the reaction.

4. A chemical equation represents a chemical reaction. If you recall
formulae of magnesium, oxygen and magnesium oxide, the above
word-equation can be written as
Mg + O2 MgO
5. A WORD EQUATION describes chemical change
using the names of the reactants and products.
Write the word equation for the reaction of methane gas with
oxygen gas to form carbon dioxide and water.
10. According to the law of conservation of
mass, total mass must be equal on the both
sides of the equation.
This type of equation is known as a balanced
chemical reaction. E.g.-
2Mg + O2 2MgO
Here both sides have two atoms of Magnesium
and two atoms of Oxygen.
