A study from the University of Toronto found that childhood physical abuse is associated with a 49% increased risk of cancer later in life. Researchers analyzed data from over 13,000 Canadians and found that 7.4% reported physical abuse as children and were later diagnosed with cancer. Even after accounting for adult behaviors and socioeconomic factors, childhood abuse was still linked to a 47% higher chance of cancer. The researchers hypothesize that chronic stress from abuse may increase cortisol levels and suppress the immune system, but more research is still needed to fully understand the connection.
