With a fringe benefit - Point Lobos has the inexplicable ability to cure whatever ails us. It is a great place to recharge your sprit. On the drive down from San Jose we were rocking out to KPIG FM of Freedom California. That is one oh seven oink five on the radio dial (107.5). It is one of the last great independent radio stations. They play an eclectic selection of rock, country, and what ever music a real DJ wants to play! A great place for a pig-out is Lou Lous griddle in the middle for good eats and crazy waitresses! Which just about says it all. It is located on the real wharf Municipal wharf No. 2 in Monterey CA. Not the wharf for tourists. Lots of great food, huge pancakes and when available the best crab Louie salad I have ever had. A tiny place with few seats do not be in a hurry. 1

June 19, 2014 11:30am Cypress Grove Trail Point Lobos State Natural Reserve Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93923 USA Geocode: 36.52054900 : -121.95048400 The Cypress Grove Trail winds through one of the two naturally growing stands of the Monterey Cypress trees remaining on Earth. The other grove is across Carmel Bay at Cypress Point. These cypresses, which formerly extended over a much wider range, withdrew to these fog-shrouded headlands as the climate changed with the close of Pleistocene epoch 15,000 years ago. The outermost trees mirror the forces of nature and time; they survive the salt spray and wind, with their roots seeking nourishment in cracks and crevices. It is not clear how much longer they will survive. Point Lobos State Reserve was originally acquired to protect these gnarled trees from developers. This particular grove is memorial to Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Allan, was the owner of the land in 1898 and was instrumental in Point Lobos becoming a part of the new California state park system in 1933. The developers wanted to make the park area a residential area like 17 Mile Drive. On this trail you get to go to an other worldly place. You walk through an area of trees and rocks covered with very strange orange, velvety stuff. It is green algae. Its orange color comes from carotene, a pigment that also occurs in carrots. The plant does not harm the trees. Between the loop trail and the parking area and amid the dense shrubbery off trail, if you focus you may discover a dozen or more large mounds of twigs. These are Dusky-footed Woodrat houses, which may achieve great age and size as successive owners add to them. 7

Brett Weston son of pioneering photographer Edward Weston made Weston Beach famous. Point Lobos is where both Westons became supreme landscape photographers. After Edwards death in 1958 his ashes were scattered at Point Lobos on Pebbly Beach, since renamed Weston Beach on the Point Lobos western face. 13

And things that are cold at all times of the year the Pacific waters are cold. If you go on a sunny day (fall and spring) you will warm right up. We usually go her first, to get as much solitude as we can. The long rough staircase down the cliff to the beach discourages most visitors and it is worth the decent and climb back up. The turquoise water and kelp forest of China Cove are amazing. China Coves sparkling jade-green waters are framed by hanging cliffside gardens. Into these cliffs the sea surges, cutting through the tiny cracks and faults in the brittle granite rock and in time creates caves that slowly become archways. These eventually collapse forming islands like Bird Island, which is just around the point to the south. 19

I measure a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa, Margaritas and their Chili Rellenos. Peppers never lets us down. If your inner carnivore is stirring, go for the Tacos al Carbon. The Margaritas are killer, we splurge on one of the special versions be careful they are mighty. You might have to stay in Monerey and sleep them off. Oh darn! 25
