Austin was founded in 1835 by Stephen Fuller Austin who established the first organized community of 300 American families in central Texas along the Colorado River. The early settlers lived in a Caddo village and Lipan Apache camp and established farms on the Blackland Prairie and Grande Prairie regions, which had climates suited for agriculture and elevations suitable for settlements.
