This document provides instructions for making clay animal tiles. It outlines choosing an animal subject, rolling out a clay slab and scoring it to prevent curling. The creator then carves their initials and sculpts the animal onto the tile using score lines and slip to attach pieces. When finished, the tile can be painted or glazed and refired.
2. 1. Choose an animal from a magazine or the Internet.
2. Roll out a 6x6 inch slab of clay about 村 inch thick.
3. On the back side of the tile cut shallow grooves to prevent the tile from curling up.
4. Carve your name or initials into the back of the tile. If you do not do this the tile
will not go into the kiln or be graded!
5. Flip the tile over and begin to create the animal on top of the tile.
6. Use the score and slip method to attach the animal pieces to the tile.
7. Remember all the animal does not have to be shown. You can only have parts of it
coming in or out of the tile.
8. When creating the parts of the animal make sure they are no thinner than your
thumb and that no parts stick out from the tile higher than your thumb.
9. After the tile has been fired your may choose to use acrylic paints or glazes on the
tile. Glazing your piece will require it to be put back in the kiln for a second firing.
