The library cleaned out print journals to create more study space and consolidate collections off-site due to limited space. An analysis identified journals available electronically, some with perpetual access and some not. Journals not available electronically were moved off-site to an archive. The project involved many staff and overcame barriers like limited transportation and outdated materials. It was completed over the summer of 2017 through discarding unnecessary journals and moving collections between floors and to off-site storage.

The original library occupied a large floor and contained around 8,000 linear feet of materials. The new space could only accommodate around 1,500 linear feet of the core collection. The remodeled smaller space has benefits like increased natural light and proximity to other firm areas. While smaller, it has improved the library's accessibility and professionalized the librarian team.

OA in 2030: IReL planning for the growth of OA in Ireland
OA in 2030: IReL planning for the growth of OA in IrelandCONUL ConferenceIn 2023, IReL, along with many Irish partner organisations, endorsed the NORF Action Plan. A key goal of the plan is to “implement a sustainable and inclusive course for achieving 100% open access to research publications by 2030”.
To date, IReL’s primary contribution in growing OA in Ireland has been in supporting a large suite of OA publishing agreements (primarily “transformative agreements”) which in 2022 made over three thousand research publications OA.
The Action Plan notes that “While transformative agreements play a role in accelerating open access […], such agreements should be considered transitional and form part of a broader strategy that encompasses and promotes a diversity of open access publishing models and options.”
This workshop will engage with delegates (many of whom will be from IReL member institutions) on IReL’s strategy on the future of transformative agreements. We will explore questions such as:
1. How can IReL support its member libraries in reaching the target of 100% OA?
2. How can IReL support its member libraries in ensuring that OA is inclusive and equitable and does not present barriers to authors?
3. How can IReL and its members library ensure that OA is sustainable?
Workshop format:
• Beginning with a presentation on IReL’s challenges and successes to date with OA publishing agreements
• The a facilitator will ask breakout groups of delegates to discuss the above questions and brainstorm ideas. Representatives from each group will summarise and present their findings.
IReL will publish a report on the outcomes of the workshop shortly after the event.

From historical bibliography to warehouse stock control: converting Trinity’s...CONUL ConferenceIn 2019 Trinity Library received a USB stick containing the work of a former Computer Science professor and his graduate students. This was the key to creating catalogue records for the entire collection of the iconic Long Room. Now, after four years of transformational work, Trinity’s early printed books are fully discoverable via the online catalogue for the first time. The work has underpinned the decant of the building in advance of the Old Library Redevelopment Project: every item has now been checked, measured, RFID tagged, and boxed, and is safe and retrievable in warehouse storage.
This ambitious project began with the pioneering work of Prof. John Byrne. In the early nineties he and his students used a custom OCR model to capture the nine-volume 19th-century printed catalogue of the Old Library. It proved too complex to separate into records at that time, but Byrne developed a search interface to circumvent the underlying issues.
Our goal was to overcome those issues and convert the raw data into usable MARC records. In late 2019, we began to disentangle it with OpenRefine, which yielded 165,000 rough records. In March 2020 we rapidly moved to the next stage, which became a wonderfully engaging lockdown project: 18 staff worked from home proof-reading and correcting the data and discovering the quirks of historical bibliography. Over the course of 2021, the data was converted to MARC, and a method of de-duping developed to preserve the pre-existing 12% of high-quality records in the catalogue. The new records were put into use – and stress-tested – during the full decant and stock check of the Old Library in 2022–2023. They now form a bridge from 19th-century bibliography to a modern closed-stack circulation system, giving readers access to the full collection in the interim Research Collections reading room.

• Standardise library’s information skills programme at key stages of the student life cycle and tailor to disciplinary needs.
• Embed skills development at programme level. (UL Action for Wisdom 2022, p.15)
This talk will describe how developments at UL in 2023, both in the library and outside of it, brought about collaborations that changed how the library provides information literacy instruction to undergraduate programmes. The developments were:
a) UL Library recruited a permanent Learning Designer.
b) A new university VLE (Brightspace) was introduced and the library was involved at all stages in its rollout.
c) The Library was asked to collaborate on a re-design of a module for all 1st year BA Arts students.
This talk will describe how Librarians collaborate with the new Learning Designer to design and develop a series of information literacy learning resources for the institutional VLE. The addition of the Learning Designer role ensures that the resources are developed using effective pedagogical and instructional design principles. The development of the learning resources in the VLE facilitates integration of the library’s resources into the curriculum. This embedded approach has fostered collaborative teaching with faculty, with the Library contributing to the delivery of a first-year BA Arts module earlier this year. This enables the Library to take a more active approach to information literacy instruction.
Overall, the talk will focus on the benefits gained and the change enacted by the Glucksman Library through a joined-up approach to the design and delivery of information literacy instruction.

Ink, Imagination & Inclusion: an exhibition partnership between UCD Library a...CONUL ConferenceIn October 2023, the exhibition ‘Ink and Imagination: Treasures from UCD Library’s Special Collections’ opened at the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) on St Stephen’s Green in Dublin, with plans to run throughout 2024. Bringing together cross-organisational expertise in collection curation, interpretation and museum design, this partnership between UCD Library and MoLI opens up UCD Library’s rich heritage collections to new and non-traditional audiences.
This presentation explores the evolution and development of the initiative, from concept to installation, and the ways in which sharing expertise and exploring new spaces can enable libraries to change the perception and reach of their heritage collections. It examines the value for libraries who are proactively focusing on their EDI commitments in partnering with other GLAM professionals as a way of accelerating and deepening a democratisation of access to the cultural riches held in academic institutions.
The presentation also maps the selection of artefacts and digital installations for inclusion in the exhibition by the UCD Library team, showcasing literary gems from Special Collections, covering the personal, the political, and the profound. It explores how the approach to presenting and interpreting these materials was informed by MoLI’s ongoing focus on social cohesion, multicultural dialogue and nurturing a sense of place and belonging – recognised in 2023 by the award of a prestigious Europa Nostra Grand Prix (the European Commission’s most important cultural heritage award) – and the additional value that can be delivered through events and programming in further building community and public engagement.

In October 2019 the National Library of Ireland (NLI) announced the donation of the Marian Keyes’ Mystery of Mercy Close Collection as the first of a series of born-digital pilot projects which arose in response to the challenge of collecting and making available Ireland’s unique literary, visual and documentary heritage in digital form. Other pilot project collections include The Yes Equality Collection and the #WakingTheFeminists Collection.
Shortly after this announcement, as part of an IRC Enterprise Partnership scheme the NLI Digital Collections team started collaborating with Maria Butler, an English and Digital Humanities PhD researcher from UCC. This collaboration which has lasted the duration of Maria’s four-year Ph.D. has proven mutually beneficial resulting in an iterative workflow as work progressed on the collection. The NLI has been able to draw on Maria’s expertise to test potential scholarly research use cases as researchers turn increasingly towards digital methods of humanities research. This has provided the NLI with additional insights beyond access requirements, including implications for processing workflows. As well as receiving mentoring from the Digital Collections team, Maria gained privileged access to a closed collection which helped her to position Keyes as a socially activist author in her research. Maria’s research has also led to an increasing awareness of the impact of intersectional research on the NLI’s collection development in relation to born digital collections. However, there have also been challenges, including commencing work at the height of Covid and navigating privacy restrictions imposed on collections.
Therefore, this presentation will explore the strategic impact of this collaboration from both participants’ perspectives and in doing so will offer recommendations for libraries and potential collaborative academic partners to drive change.

Establishing a Library Learning Community - A means of promoting change and i...CONUL ConferenceAt MTU Library we actively seek transformation and embrace innovation. Since first establishing a Library Learning Community (LLC) in 2019 members have sought to challenge expectations and reimagine the way students and staff experience our campus libraries.
Supported by the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) at MTU, the LLC team meet regularly to share ideas and collaborate through experiential learning, with a view to developing initiatives impacting positively on student learning and wellbeing.
Under the auspices of the TLU, learning communities (LCs) exist across many departments within the university. Between the Cork and Kerry campus libraries and the Fleischmann Library at the Cork School of Music (CSM), there are currently two independent LLCs active. At CSM, the LLC includes both Library and academic staff members.
The Learning Community model has enabled library staff to effectively collaborate with staff from other departments and universities and work alongside student partners to generate positive change. The LLC has also inspired library staff to compete for funding at both a local and national level. Since 2019, funding awarded from NTUTTOR and the National Forum for Teaching and Learning, has helped to successfully roll out library projects focussing on Information Literacy (Assignment Toolkit OER), Inclusivity and Universal Design (Reader Pen Project), along with providing CPD opportunities for staff in the areas of pedagogy and communication skills .
In 2023, the LLC at CSM launched the “Listening Spot,” a dedicated library space where staff and students can access the library’s extensive collection of sound recordings using newly installed audio equipment.
The success of a learning community depends upon the shared vision and commitment of members. This presentation will tell our story - the challenges faced, the setbacks overcome, the successes achieved – and motivate others to form similar-styled learning communities in academic libraries elsewhere.

Offering a case study, we will discuss the (in large part unforeseen) transformation of an Acquisitions / Cataloguing / Preparation Department in DCU Library as a result of implementation of a new library management system (planned). We will review how established workflow practices had to be altered (expected) and/or were discarded as staff explored a suite of new features (less expected). We will show by this example how libraries and library staff not only learn through change, but also, by embracing it, can actively contribute to changing environments, impacting policies and processes, departmental structure, and service delivery.

Adjacent to evolving and expanding formats of library materials, the tasks and responsibilities of the 21st century librarians have become more complex and creatively innovative. To keep up with the ever-changing interests and information seeking behavior of the users, specifically from the academe, librarians must step up their game by redesigning not just the resources offered by their library, but also their roles. Creative thinking among academic librarians is essential as this allows them to provide solutions to information gaps among users by using their imagination and intellect, combined. In 2022, the Reference section of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) Main Library (ML) or Information Services and Instruction Section (ISAIS) Creatives was formed to design and produce publication materials that would promote the activities, programs, services, and resources of the section.
This study employs a qualitative research method, specifically narrative analysis design to analyze the personal experiences and stories of reference librarians in UPD ML ISAIS Creatives as they make a transformative shift from traditional library promotions to unconventional marketing strategies and digital content creation. Interview questions on the following aspects shall be employed to gather appropriate and relevant data: (1) ISAIS Promotional Tasks & Responsibilities, (2) Library Marketing Trainings,(3) Perspective on the shift of task from traditional to unconventional, (4) Personal Interests and Inspiration in creating contents, and (5) Problems and Challenges encountered in producing outputs. This paper also aims to document the creative efforts of the team in promoting library activities, resources, and services. Moreover, it shall acknowledge the efforts and initiatives of the librarians in adapting to the constantly developing needs and interest of the clients they serve by genuinely accepting that shift happens - even in libraries.

Systems Integration as a Change Project at TU Dublin LibraryCONUL ConferenceTechnological University Dublin undertook a library management system integration project in 2023. The goal of the project was to achieve a single, university-wide system by merging the contents of two Koha systems from our libraries in Blanchardstown and Tallaght into the Sierra system used by the rest of the library service.
My proposed presentation will consider the integration as a change project, discussing:
• The methods used to unify the library collections.
• The impact the systems changes involved had on staff workflows in the context of a new organisational design.
• How the library maintained service continuity for our users.
The methods and outcomes discussed may be of value to other libraries involved in similar largescale integration projects or projects where systems changes result in workflow changes.
In its early stages the project involved stakeholder workshops to map out the functionality and workflows relevant to all three systems. These were then re-mapped for in newly integrated versions.
In some cases, new processes were necessary either because the new organisational design meant existing staff workflows were no longer workable (e.g., site-based acquisitions) or because other related systems or processes were not yet unified (e.g., the student data system).
Detailed data cleansing and mapping work was required to prepare and transfer bibliographic, item, and patron data to Sierra.
The project encountered some challenges. For example, the data loads to Sierra were not without unforeseen complications. The project was able to resolve these challenges without significant disruption and the library management systems were ultimately integrated on schedule.
The changes involved streamlined and expanded services for library users, helped establish new workflows for library staff, and positioned the library to better prepare for future systems developments.

Something old, something new; mitigating inappropriate student AI-use, by pro...CONUL ConferenceArtificial Intelligence (AI): an existential crisis for many, or a tool that will bring groundbreaking discoveries? It appears that it may have the potential to be both. In Higher Education (HE), inappropriate AI-use carries serious implications around academic integrity for students. In this parallel session, we will explore how extensive digital primary source collections in MU were used in new training sessions with MU teaching faculty, to encourage a reduction in the inappropriate use of AI in student submissions. Faculty also benefited from hearing of the breadth of digital primary sources available to them for their teaching, and of ways of using this material to enrich their pedagogy. Three separate webinars for MU faculty were delivered in 2023-2024: one focusing on digital primary sources, two on using AI for teaching faculty. Learning outcomes included familiarity with MU Library's digital primary source databases, integration of digital primary source material into teaching, development of assignments to discourage inappropriate AI usage, and exploration of case studies from other universities. Also, faculty were briefed in these sessions on likely scenarios of AI-use in HE soon. A dedicated LibGuide was tailored to align with this dual approach, holding practical resources for faculty to encourage adoption. The LibGuide encourages use of MU digital primary sources and suggests to teaching faculty, ways of avoiding inappropriate AI-use by their students in assignment-types, and classroom activities chosen.

Effecting Positive Change in Library Communities by Establishing Culturally R...CONUL ConferenceNortheastern State University (NSU) Libraries offers a variety of services and resources to enhance the academic, personal, and cultural development experience of students in a supportive environment that values the traditions of American Indian Cultural heritage. The Libraries serves as a changemaker by enhancing the culture and collections of the regional community and librarianship at large. Native students have the lowest retention and graduate rates of all students. Libraries can play a critical role in providing comprehensive services designed to increase success by using a Grandmother’s Pedagogy approach that focuses on building connections between student and the institution to establish a sense of trust. Libraries serve as integral spaces where holistic and Indigenous worldviews can be braided in academia. In this presentation, the presenter will share the expansion of services and resources produced from both a regional and international perspective. Regionally, wrap around services and resources are delivered within a culturally relevant framework that include the development and application of culturally responsive curriculum in Library Media graduate course curriculum, creation and storage of culturally sensitive open educational resources in the library digital repository, faculty and staff training to increase accessibility of curriculum and content for remote learners, and community building efforts of peer and faculty mentoring. Examples implemented beyond the region include creating culturally respectful subject authority proposals for subject headings through the Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO). Through these SACO proposals, the presenter contributes subject headings for addition to the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCHS) for names of indigenous tribes of the United States and related subject headings on different aspects of indigenous tribal culture. These achievements provide examples of how libraries can cultivate a more culturally just and fair world for Indigenous and non-Native peoples in the communities they serve and beyond.

Libraries, collections and creative practice : providing a safe space for lea...CONUL ConferenceAs part of the Decade of Centenaries funded Poetry as Commemoration project (2022-2023) UCD Library organised the delivery of a 150 creative writing workshops in 68 locations across Ireland. This project provided 1300 citizens, aged from 10 to 90 years old, with opportunities for creative engagement with library and archive collections relating to the War of Independence and Civil War.
In this presentation I will explore how and why this programme of workshops was established and implemented within the wider context of the Poetry as Commemoration project and UCD Library.
The project increased public awareness of local & national library and archive collections relating to this period. It provided citizens with the opportunity to consider complex aspects of national, local and family history in a safe and creative environment. For some workshop participants who carried inter-generational trauma with regards to the War of Independence and Civil War, taking part in the workshops was a healing experience.
The Poetry as Commemoration workshops encouraged people to visit library spaces and collections that had hitherto seemed out of reach. For the librarians and archivists, it changed perspectives on the possibilities for these collections which have traditionally been used primarily by those writing history. For UCD Library, it also resulted in the creation of a new collection. To date 600 poems written in these workshops have been gathered to create a new archive in UCD Special Collections.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how creative engagement within the workshops resulted in a transformative experience for libraries, communities and individuals throughout Ireland.
I will also examine the benefits of leading such a project from an academic library perspective and I will explore the opportunities that the collaboration between libraries and creative practitioners can provide for the library sector.

Scottish Universities Press - A Collaborative Library-led OA Publishing ModelCONUL ConferenceScottish Universities Press (SUP) is a fully open access and not-for-profit publishing press coordinated through SCURL and managed by 18 academic libraries, making it the largest library-led publishing collaboration in the UK. SUP has created a cost-effective model for open access publishing of monographs, meeting new funder and policy requirements and offering researchers at Scottish institutions a clear route to publishing open access.
Over the last two years, SUP has advanced at pace through a demanding start-up phase, where all policies and processes were designed from the ground up. We are now approaching the next phase of the project, moving on to scaling up the Press, with the first SUP titles due for publication in late Spring 2024.
A sense of shared ownership across member libraries is key to the development of the Press and we have been keen to keep as much of the work within the SCURL network as possible. This talk will discuss the transformational changes associated with library-led publishing and reflect on the practical impacts of open access on libraries and library staff, outlining the results of a survey carried out across SCURL member libraries in early 2024.

A Digital-First Approach for Kerby Miller CollectionCONUL ConferenceIn 2024 Professor Kerby A. Miller’s vast research collection about Irish immigration to North America and Irish diaspora identities will be made available online via a dedicated digital collection portal, titled IMIRCE. To make the materials accessible to academic users and the public alike with minimal delay, the University of Galway Library opted for a digital-first approach. The decision to go digital first is in line with the library’s commitment to being a digital service, driving research and opening scholarship.
In 2023, the full collection (150,000+ pages) was scanned in order to develop and test a new digital procedure for the curation, description, ingestion and publication of an archives collection. The first phase of the project has focused on Miller’s collection of Irish emigrant letters (transcripts, originals and photocopies of originals), with forthcoming work scheduled on his collection of memoirs documenting the emigrant experience. The 10-min lightning talk will showcase the IMIRCE platform and provide insights into the evolving digital curation workflow. We will also highlight the ongoing commitment to expanding the material through continued collection and transcription efforts. The talk will touch upon IMIRCE's policies, balancing historical accuracy with user discretion, while delivering open content. We aim to showcase IMIRCE as more than a digital archive—it's a bridge connecting scholars, descendants, and curious minds across time and oceans.

Cultivating change: leveraging OERs to transform higher education (a case stu...CONUL ConferenceOpen educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources created by anyone in any medium which have been released under an open license, allowing others to access, use, distribute and adapt the resource (UNESCO, BCcampus). This means OER have the potential to be transformative in higher education. Research has shown integrating OER into courses enhances the quality and efficacy of the teaching and learning experience (OER Evidence Report 2013-2014). This talk explores the pivotal role libraries can play as changemakers through strategically integrating OER in library initiatives to support teaching and empower learning.
UCC Library received Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) funding from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education to explore the incorporation of OER into teaching and learning within UCC. From July 2023 to January 2024, the Library used funding to: review current research regarding OERs, engage with various stakeholders to gain understandings and insights to current knowledge of OERs, design and implement a pilot project incorporating OER into 3 modules, and develop an OER framework to outline requirements needed for successful implementation of OER.
This talk provides an insight into the findings of the SATLE-funded project. Attendees will receive practical insights into how Libraries can support OER adoption through the lessons learned and challenges encountered. These insights will be drawn from first-hand experience from the project and will include identifying potential funding streams, harnessing existing resources, engaging with key stakeholders, and establishing scalable service offerings. The talk will be beneficial to those interested in OER or for those currently navigating the landscape of OER integration as part of library service offerings.

They are the next logical step in creating an open research environment, wherein information is free to readership and publishers are providers of a service rather than gatekeepers of knowledge. UKRI policy, has spearheaded this dramatic shift, bringing in a new open access policy specifically for monographs from January 2024. The policy itself seeks to have all UKRI funded books & book chapters either fully open access immediately upon first publication, or open access after an embargo period of 12 months. The question is how? How does this new open access direction interact with the practicalities the publishing world presents and fundamentally how much cost is too much cost in achieving an Open Research Landscape. This 10-minute lightning talk aims to give a brief overview of how we librarians are supporting open access monographs and looks at the developments in Diamond Open Access as well as the challenges that traditional publishing presents to this new open access route.

We must create the conditions that will allow anyone to feel that “this is my home. I am not an outsider here. I do not have to beg or to apologise to be here. I belong here.” (Mbembe, 2015)
How to practice the right to belong? This workshop aims to reflect on collaborative practices as a methodologies for change, particularly in the context of equality, diversity and inclusion in the libraries.
As a postdoctoral researcher at the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), I am currently conducting a project on diversifying the library collections and its access, enhancing visibility of underrepresented categories such as artists and designers based on the island of Ireland and coming from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. I approached this task through a facilitation of a series of focus groups with thirty-five artists and designers from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in order to develop a collaborative methodology around the research project, giving agency to the subjects of the research to directly shape the study since its beginnings.
Embracing the participatory-led approach implemented in my research at NIVAL, the workshop’s participants will collectively discuss three key concepts related to the notions of belonging in the libraries: ‘site accessibility’, ‘language of inclusion’, ‘diverse policies of collection’. Using the ‘emergent strategy’ - a tool for self-organisation developed by social justice facilitator and activists Adrianne Maree Brown (Brown, 2017) - the participants will articulate a series of propositions to achieve a more inclusive and welcoming environment for library’s users and researchers, within their own institution and beyond. The visual material produced during the workshop will be documented and shared via email to the participants, as a useful toolkit for collective thinking and change-making.

‘Forever - is composed of Nows’: Knowledge is PowerCONUL ConferencePreviously Special Collections & Archives were viewed as less readily open and accessible, however since 2012 this perspective has shifted. We acknowledge that 19th – early 20th century collectors are predominantly male; in the last 10 years we prioritised acquiring and listing more EDI created and owned collections. Our collections are held for posterity but through the process of kaizen we aim for 1% improvement daily of how, who and what we collect. This is so collections in the future better reflect who we are in the constantly evolving society. To this end we have selected an Emily Dickinson quote for the title as it too challenges our preconceived notions of past, present and future.
Our paper will address how we are changing what makes an item worth collecting. We will identify and address the cultural bias of historical collectors and how we increase the visibility of a more diverse range of voices. Examples of this process include Emma Horgan listing the Elizabeth Friedlander collection (2016) and Elaine Harrington creating the Gayfield Press collection (2021), both of which have extended the ways potential stakeholders view the usefulness of our collections. In 2023/2024 the Radical Humanities Lab use these collections for modules including Women, Class & Society; Visualising War; and Visualising Feminist Activism.
In changemaker terms we are aligning our work with our values which match those of our institution’s. We know we are not ‘heroes in capes’ therefore we partner with academics, UCC’s community and further afield to influence and connect, utilising our skills and expertise to create lasting change. These actions will enable the collections to be widely used and our level of impact aligns with the potential for systems change as we gain momentum.

Women in the Book Trade: exploring the collections of the Russell Library at ...CONUL ConferenceSpecial Collections and Archives at Maynooth University Library is spread across two sites; the historic collections of St. Patrick’s College, held in the Russell Library and Special Collections and Archives in the John Paull II Library. The collection includes over 42,000 printed works dating from the fifteenth century onwards.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, March 2024, an exhibition focusing on women and the production of books will take place in the Russell Library. Women have been involved in the book trade since the fifteenth century. This exhibition aims to shed light on female printers, publishers, and booksellers in the Library’s collection.
This presentation will outline examples of items in the exhibition and explore their cultural importance. These examples will be used to describe the research methods employed and demonstrate the challenges in locating women in the catalogue. It will show how this information can be added to the catalogue records and outline the benefits to enhancing the records thereby making the collections more discoverable and accessible to the research community.

OA in 2030: IReL planning for the growth of OA in IrelandCONUL ConferenceIn 2023, IReL, along with many Irish partner organisations, endorsed the NORF Action Plan. A key goal of the plan is to “implement a sustainable and inclusive course for achieving 100% open access to research publications by 2030”.
To date, IReL’s primary contribution in growing OA in Ireland has been in supporting a large suite of OA publishing agreements (primarily “transformative agreements”) which in 2022 made over three thousand research publications OA.
The Action Plan notes that “While transformative agreements play a role in accelerating open access […], such agreements should be considered transitional and form part of a broader strategy that encompasses and promotes a diversity of open access publishing models and options.”
This workshop will engage with delegates (many of whom will be from IReL member institutions) on IReL’s strategy on the future of transformative agreements. We will explore questions such as:
1. How can IReL support its member libraries in reaching the target of 100% OA?
2. How can IReL support its member libraries in ensuring that OA is inclusive and equitable and does not present barriers to authors?
3. How can IReL and its members library ensure that OA is sustainable?
Workshop format:
• Beginning with a presentation on IReL’s challenges and successes to date with OA publishing agreements
• The a facilitator will ask breakout groups of delegates to discuss the above questions and brainstorm ideas. Representatives from each group will summarise and present their findings.
IReL will publish a report on the outcomes of the workshop shortly after the event.

From historical bibliography to warehouse stock control: converting Trinity’s...CONUL ConferenceIn 2019 Trinity Library received a USB stick containing the work of a former Computer Science professor and his graduate students. This was the key to creating catalogue records for the entire collection of the iconic Long Room. Now, after four years of transformational work, Trinity’s early printed books are fully discoverable via the online catalogue for the first time. The work has underpinned the decant of the building in advance of the Old Library Redevelopment Project: every item has now been checked, measured, RFID tagged, and boxed, and is safe and retrievable in warehouse storage.
This ambitious project began with the pioneering work of Prof. John Byrne. In the early nineties he and his students used a custom OCR model to capture the nine-volume 19th-century printed catalogue of the Old Library. It proved too complex to separate into records at that time, but Byrne developed a search interface to circumvent the underlying issues.
Our goal was to overcome those issues and convert the raw data into usable MARC records. In late 2019, we began to disentangle it with OpenRefine, which yielded 165,000 rough records. In March 2020 we rapidly moved to the next stage, which became a wonderfully engaging lockdown project: 18 staff worked from home proof-reading and correcting the data and discovering the quirks of historical bibliography. Over the course of 2021, the data was converted to MARC, and a method of de-duping developed to preserve the pre-existing 12% of high-quality records in the catalogue. The new records were put into use – and stress-tested – during the full decant and stock check of the Old Library in 2022–2023. They now form a bridge from 19th-century bibliography to a modern closed-stack circulation system, giving readers access to the full collection in the interim Research Collections reading room.

• Standardise library’s information skills programme at key stages of the student life cycle and tailor to disciplinary needs.
• Embed skills development at programme level. (UL Action for Wisdom 2022, p.15)
This talk will describe how developments at UL in 2023, both in the library and outside of it, brought about collaborations that changed how the library provides information literacy instruction to undergraduate programmes. The developments were:
a) UL Library recruited a permanent Learning Designer.
b) A new university VLE (Brightspace) was introduced and the library was involved at all stages in its rollout.
c) The Library was asked to collaborate on a re-design of a module for all 1st year BA Arts students.
This talk will describe how Librarians collaborate with the new Learning Designer to design and develop a series of information literacy learning resources for the institutional VLE. The addition of the Learning Designer role ensures that the resources are developed using effective pedagogical and instructional design principles. The development of the learning resources in the VLE facilitates integration of the library’s resources into the curriculum. This embedded approach has fostered collaborative teaching with faculty, with the Library contributing to the delivery of a first-year BA Arts module earlier this year. This enables the Library to take a more active approach to information literacy instruction.
Overall, the talk will focus on the benefits gained and the change enacted by the Glucksman Library through a joined-up approach to the design and delivery of information literacy instruction.

Ink, Imagination & Inclusion: an exhibition partnership between UCD Library a...CONUL ConferenceIn October 2023, the exhibition ‘Ink and Imagination: Treasures from UCD Library’s Special Collections’ opened at the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) on St Stephen’s Green in Dublin, with plans to run throughout 2024. Bringing together cross-organisational expertise in collection curation, interpretation and museum design, this partnership between UCD Library and MoLI opens up UCD Library’s rich heritage collections to new and non-traditional audiences.
This presentation explores the evolution and development of the initiative, from concept to installation, and the ways in which sharing expertise and exploring new spaces can enable libraries to change the perception and reach of their heritage collections. It examines the value for libraries who are proactively focusing on their EDI commitments in partnering with other GLAM professionals as a way of accelerating and deepening a democratisation of access to the cultural riches held in academic institutions.
The presentation also maps the selection of artefacts and digital installations for inclusion in the exhibition by the UCD Library team, showcasing literary gems from Special Collections, covering the personal, the political, and the profound. It explores how the approach to presenting and interpreting these materials was informed by MoLI’s ongoing focus on social cohesion, multicultural dialogue and nurturing a sense of place and belonging – recognised in 2023 by the award of a prestigious Europa Nostra Grand Prix (the European Commission’s most important cultural heritage award) – and the additional value that can be delivered through events and programming in further building community and public engagement.

In October 2019 the National Library of Ireland (NLI) announced the donation of the Marian Keyes’ Mystery of Mercy Close Collection as the first of a series of born-digital pilot projects which arose in response to the challenge of collecting and making available Ireland’s unique literary, visual and documentary heritage in digital form. Other pilot project collections include The Yes Equality Collection and the #WakingTheFeminists Collection.
Shortly after this announcement, as part of an IRC Enterprise Partnership scheme the NLI Digital Collections team started collaborating with Maria Butler, an English and Digital Humanities PhD researcher from UCC. This collaboration which has lasted the duration of Maria’s four-year Ph.D. has proven mutually beneficial resulting in an iterative workflow as work progressed on the collection. The NLI has been able to draw on Maria’s expertise to test potential scholarly research use cases as researchers turn increasingly towards digital methods of humanities research. This has provided the NLI with additional insights beyond access requirements, including implications for processing workflows. As well as receiving mentoring from the Digital Collections team, Maria gained privileged access to a closed collection which helped her to position Keyes as a socially activist author in her research. Maria’s research has also led to an increasing awareness of the impact of intersectional research on the NLI’s collection development in relation to born digital collections. However, there have also been challenges, including commencing work at the height of Covid and navigating privacy restrictions imposed on collections.
Therefore, this presentation will explore the strategic impact of this collaboration from both participants’ perspectives and in doing so will offer recommendations for libraries and potential collaborative academic partners to drive change.

Establishing a Library Learning Community - A means of promoting change and i...CONUL ConferenceAt MTU Library we actively seek transformation and embrace innovation. Since first establishing a Library Learning Community (LLC) in 2019 members have sought to challenge expectations and reimagine the way students and staff experience our campus libraries.
Supported by the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) at MTU, the LLC team meet regularly to share ideas and collaborate through experiential learning, with a view to developing initiatives impacting positively on student learning and wellbeing.
Under the auspices of the TLU, learning communities (LCs) exist across many departments within the university. Between the Cork and Kerry campus libraries and the Fleischmann Library at the Cork School of Music (CSM), there are currently two independent LLCs active. At CSM, the LLC includes both Library and academic staff members.
The Learning Community model has enabled library staff to effectively collaborate with staff from other departments and universities and work alongside student partners to generate positive change. The LLC has also inspired library staff to compete for funding at both a local and national level. Since 2019, funding awarded from NTUTTOR and the National Forum for Teaching and Learning, has helped to successfully roll out library projects focussing on Information Literacy (Assignment Toolkit OER), Inclusivity and Universal Design (Reader Pen Project), along with providing CPD opportunities for staff in the areas of pedagogy and communication skills .
In 2023, the LLC at CSM launched the “Listening Spot,” a dedicated library space where staff and students can access the library’s extensive collection of sound recordings using newly installed audio equipment.
The success of a learning community depends upon the shared vision and commitment of members. This presentation will tell our story - the challenges faced, the setbacks overcome, the successes achieved – and motivate others to form similar-styled learning communities in academic libraries elsewhere.

Offering a case study, we will discuss the (in large part unforeseen) transformation of an Acquisitions / Cataloguing / Preparation Department in DCU Library as a result of implementation of a new library management system (planned). We will review how established workflow practices had to be altered (expected) and/or were discarded as staff explored a suite of new features (less expected). We will show by this example how libraries and library staff not only learn through change, but also, by embracing it, can actively contribute to changing environments, impacting policies and processes, departmental structure, and service delivery.

Adjacent to evolving and expanding formats of library materials, the tasks and responsibilities of the 21st century librarians have become more complex and creatively innovative. To keep up with the ever-changing interests and information seeking behavior of the users, specifically from the academe, librarians must step up their game by redesigning not just the resources offered by their library, but also their roles. Creative thinking among academic librarians is essential as this allows them to provide solutions to information gaps among users by using their imagination and intellect, combined. In 2022, the Reference section of the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) Main Library (ML) or Information Services and Instruction Section (ISAIS) Creatives was formed to design and produce publication materials that would promote the activities, programs, services, and resources of the section.
This study employs a qualitative research method, specifically narrative analysis design to analyze the personal experiences and stories of reference librarians in UPD ML ISAIS Creatives as they make a transformative shift from traditional library promotions to unconventional marketing strategies and digital content creation. Interview questions on the following aspects shall be employed to gather appropriate and relevant data: (1) ISAIS Promotional Tasks & Responsibilities, (2) Library Marketing Trainings,(3) Perspective on the shift of task from traditional to unconventional, (4) Personal Interests and Inspiration in creating contents, and (5) Problems and Challenges encountered in producing outputs. This paper also aims to document the creative efforts of the team in promoting library activities, resources, and services. Moreover, it shall acknowledge the efforts and initiatives of the librarians in adapting to the constantly developing needs and interest of the clients they serve by genuinely accepting that shift happens - even in libraries.

Systems Integration as a Change Project at TU Dublin LibraryCONUL ConferenceTechnological University Dublin undertook a library management system integration project in 2023. The goal of the project was to achieve a single, university-wide system by merging the contents of two Koha systems from our libraries in Blanchardstown and Tallaght into the Sierra system used by the rest of the library service.
My proposed presentation will consider the integration as a change project, discussing:
• The methods used to unify the library collections.
• The impact the systems changes involved had on staff workflows in the context of a new organisational design.
• How the library maintained service continuity for our users.
The methods and outcomes discussed may be of value to other libraries involved in similar largescale integration projects or projects where systems changes result in workflow changes.
In its early stages the project involved stakeholder workshops to map out the functionality and workflows relevant to all three systems. These were then re-mapped for in newly integrated versions.
In some cases, new processes were necessary either because the new organisational design meant existing staff workflows were no longer workable (e.g., site-based acquisitions) or because other related systems or processes were not yet unified (e.g., the student data system).
Detailed data cleansing and mapping work was required to prepare and transfer bibliographic, item, and patron data to Sierra.
The project encountered some challenges. For example, the data loads to Sierra were not without unforeseen complications. The project was able to resolve these challenges without significant disruption and the library management systems were ultimately integrated on schedule.
The changes involved streamlined and expanded services for library users, helped establish new workflows for library staff, and positioned the library to better prepare for future systems developments.

Something old, something new; mitigating inappropriate student AI-use, by pro...CONUL ConferenceArtificial Intelligence (AI): an existential crisis for many, or a tool that will bring groundbreaking discoveries? It appears that it may have the potential to be both. In Higher Education (HE), inappropriate AI-use carries serious implications around academic integrity for students. In this parallel session, we will explore how extensive digital primary source collections in MU were used in new training sessions with MU teaching faculty, to encourage a reduction in the inappropriate use of AI in student submissions. Faculty also benefited from hearing of the breadth of digital primary sources available to them for their teaching, and of ways of using this material to enrich their pedagogy. Three separate webinars for MU faculty were delivered in 2023-2024: one focusing on digital primary sources, two on using AI for teaching faculty. Learning outcomes included familiarity with MU Library's digital primary source databases, integration of digital primary source material into teaching, development of assignments to discourage inappropriate AI usage, and exploration of case studies from other universities. Also, faculty were briefed in these sessions on likely scenarios of AI-use in HE soon. A dedicated LibGuide was tailored to align with this dual approach, holding practical resources for faculty to encourage adoption. The LibGuide encourages use of MU digital primary sources and suggests to teaching faculty, ways of avoiding inappropriate AI-use by their students in assignment-types, and classroom activities chosen.

The Libraries serves as a changemaker by enhancing the culture and collections of the regional community and librarianship at large. Native students have the lowest retention and graduate rates of all students. Libraries can play a critical role in providing comprehensive services designed to increase success by using a Grandmother’s Pedagogy approach that focuses on building connections between student and the institution to establish a sense of trust. Libraries serve as integral spaces where holistic and Indigenous worldviews can be braided in academia. In this presentation, the presenter will share the expansion of services and resources produced from both a regional and international perspective. Regionally, wrap around services and resources are delivered within a culturally relevant framework that include the development and application of culturally responsive curriculum in Library Media graduate course curriculum, creation and storage of culturally sensitive open educational resources in the library digital repository, faculty and staff training to increase accessibility of curriculum and content for remote learners, and community building efforts of peer and faculty mentoring. Examples implemented beyond the region include creating culturally respectful subject authority proposals for subject headings through the Subject Authority Cooperative Program (SACO). Through these SACO proposals, the presenter contributes subject headings for addition to the Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCHS) for names of indigenous tribes of the United States and related subject headings on different aspects of indigenous tribal culture. These achievements provide examples of how libraries can cultivate a more culturally just and fair world for Indigenous and non-Native peoples in the communities they serve and beyond.

Libraries, collections and creative practice : providing a safe space for lea...CONUL ConferenceAs part of the Decade of Centenaries funded Poetry as Commemoration project (2022-2023) UCD Library organised the delivery of a 150 creative writing workshops in 68 locations across Ireland. This project provided 1300 citizens, aged from 10 to 90 years old, with opportunities for creative engagement with library and archive collections relating to the War of Independence and Civil War.
In this presentation I will explore how and why this programme of workshops was established and implemented within the wider context of the Poetry as Commemoration project and UCD Library.
The project increased public awareness of local & national library and archive collections relating to this period. It provided citizens with the opportunity to consider complex aspects of national, local and family history in a safe and creative environment. For some workshop participants who carried inter-generational trauma with regards to the War of Independence and Civil War, taking part in the workshops was a healing experience.
The Poetry as Commemoration workshops encouraged people to visit library spaces and collections that had hitherto seemed out of reach. For the librarians and archivists, it changed perspectives on the possibilities for these collections which have traditionally been used primarily by those writing history. For UCD Library, it also resulted in the creation of a new collection. To date 600 poems written in these workshops have been gathered to create a new archive in UCD Special Collections.
In this presentation, I will demonstrate how creative engagement within the workshops resulted in a transformative experience for libraries, communities and individuals throughout Ireland.
I will also examine the benefits of leading such a project from an academic library perspective and I will explore the opportunities that the collaboration between libraries and creative practitioners can provide for the library sector.

Scottish Universities Press - A Collaborative Library-led OA Publishing ModelCONUL ConferenceScottish Universities Press (SUP) is a fully open access and not-for-profit publishing press coordinated through SCURL and managed by 18 academic libraries, making it the largest library-led publishing collaboration in the UK. SUP has created a cost-effective model for open access publishing of monographs, meeting new funder and policy requirements and offering researchers at Scottish institutions a clear route to publishing open access.
Over the last two years, SUP has advanced at pace through a demanding start-up phase, where all policies and processes were designed from the ground up. We are now approaching the next phase of the project, moving on to scaling up the Press, with the first SUP titles due for publication in late Spring 2024.
A sense of shared ownership across member libraries is key to the development of the Press and we have been keen to keep as much of the work within the SCURL network as possible. This talk will discuss the transformational changes associated with library-led publishing and reflect on the practical impacts of open access on libraries and library staff, outlining the results of a survey carried out across SCURL member libraries in early 2024.

Miller’s vast research collection about Irish immigration to North America and Irish diaspora identities will be made available online via a dedicated digital collection portal, titled IMIRCE. To make the materials accessible to academic users and the public alike with minimal delay, the University of Galway Library opted for a digital-first approach. The decision to go digital first is in line with the library’s commitment to being a digital service, driving research and opening scholarship.
In 2023, the full collection (150,000+ pages) was scanned in order to develop and test a new digital procedure for the curation, description, ingestion and publication of an archives collection. The first phase of the project has focused on Miller’s collection of Irish emigrant letters (transcripts, originals and photocopies of originals), with forthcoming work scheduled on his collection of memoirs documenting the emigrant experience. The 10-min lightning talk will showcase the IMIRCE platform and provide insights into the evolving digital curation workflow. We will also highlight the ongoing commitment to expanding the material through continued collection and transcription efforts. The talk will touch upon IMIRCE's policies, balancing historical accuracy with user discretion, while delivering open content. We aim to showcase IMIRCE as more than a digital archive—it's a bridge connecting scholars, descendants, and curious minds across time and oceans.

Cultivating change: leveraging OERs to transform higher education (a case stu...CONUL ConferenceOpen educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources created by anyone in any medium which have been released under an open license, allowing others to access, use, distribute and adapt the resource (UNESCO, BCcampus). This means OER have the potential to be transformative in higher education. Research has shown integrating OER into courses enhances the quality and efficacy of the teaching and learning experience (OER Evidence Report 2013-2014). This talk explores the pivotal role libraries can play as changemakers through strategically integrating OER in library initiatives to support teaching and empower learning.
UCC Library received Strategic Alignment of Teaching and Learning Enhancement (SATLE) funding from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education to explore the incorporation of OER into teaching and learning within UCC. From July 2023 to January 2024, the Library used funding to: review current research regarding OERs, engage with various stakeholders to gain understandings and insights to current knowledge of OERs, design and implement a pilot project incorporating OER into 3 modules, and develop an OER framework to outline requirements needed for successful implementation of OER.
This talk provides an insight into the findings of the SATLE-funded project. Attendees will receive practical insights into how Libraries can support OER adoption through the lessons learned and challenges encountered. These insights will be drawn from first-hand experience from the project and will include identifying potential funding streams, harnessing existing resources, engaging with key stakeholders, and establishing scalable service offerings. The talk will be beneficial to those interested in OER or for those currently navigating the landscape of OER integration as part of library service offerings.

Open access monographs: policy versus practicalityCONUL ConferenceOpen access monographs present a new departure in the Open Research Landscape. They are the next logical step in creating an open research environment, wherein information is free to readership and publishers are providers of a service rather than gatekeepers of knowledge. UKRI policy, has spearheaded this dramatic shift, bringing in a new open access policy specifically for monographs from January 2024. The policy itself seeks to have all UKRI funded books & book chapters either fully open access immediately upon first publication, or open access after an embargo period of 12 months. The question is how? How does this new open access direction interact with the practicalities the publishing world presents and fundamentally how much cost is too much cost in achieving an Open Research Landscape. This 10-minute lightning talk aims to give a brief overview of how we librarians are supporting open access monographs and looks at the developments in Diamond Open Access as well as the challenges that traditional publishing presents to this new open access route.

How to practice the right to belong? This workshop aims to reflect on collaborative practices as a methodologies for change, particularly in the context of equality, diversity and inclusion in the libraries.
As a postdoctoral researcher at the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL), I am currently conducting a project on diversifying the library collections and its access, enhancing visibility of underrepresented categories such as artists and designers based on the island of Ireland and coming from diverse backgrounds and nationalities. I approached this task through a facilitation of a series of focus groups with thirty-five artists and designers from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, in order to develop a collaborative methodology around the research project, giving agency to the subjects of the research to directly shape the study since its beginnings.
Embracing the participatory-led approach implemented in my research at NIVAL, the workshop’s participants will collectively discuss three key concepts related to the notions of belonging in the libraries: ‘site accessibility’, ‘language of inclusion’, ‘diverse policies of collection’. Using the ‘emergent strategy’ - a tool for self-organisation developed by social justice facilitator and activists Adrianne Maree Brown (Brown, 2017) - the participants will articulate a series of propositions to achieve a more inclusive and welcoming environment for library’s users and researchers, within their own institution and beyond. The visual material produced during the workshop will be documented and shared via email to the participants, as a useful toolkit for collective thinking and change-making.

‘Forever - is composed of Nows’: Knowledge is PowerCONUL ConferencePreviously Special Collections & Archives were viewed as less readily open and accessible, however since 2012 this perspective has shifted. We acknowledge that 19th – early 20th century collectors are predominantly male; in the last 10 years we prioritised acquiring and listing more EDI created and owned collections. Our collections are held for posterity but through the process of kaizen we aim for 1% improvement daily of how, who and what we collect. This is so collections in the future better reflect who we are in the constantly evolving society. To this end we have selected an Emily Dickinson quote for the title as it too challenges our preconceived notions of past, present and future.
Our paper will address how we are changing what makes an item worth collecting. We will identify and address the cultural bias of historical collectors and how we increase the visibility of a more diverse range of voices. Examples of this process include Emma Horgan listing the Elizabeth Friedlander collection (2016) and Elaine Harrington creating the Gayfield Press collection (2021), both of which have extended the ways potential stakeholders view the usefulness of our collections. In 2023/2024 the Radical Humanities Lab use these collections for modules including Women, Class & Society; Visualising War; and Visualising Feminist Activism.
In changemaker terms we are aligning our work with our values which match those of our institution’s. We know we are not ‘heroes in capes’ therefore we partner with academics, UCC’s community and further afield to influence and connect, utilising our skills and expertise to create lasting change. These actions will enable the collections to be widely used and our level of impact aligns with the potential for systems change as we gain momentum.

The collection includes over 42,000 printed works dating from the fifteenth century onwards.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, March 2024, an exhibition focusing on women and the production of books will take place in the Russell Library. Women have been involved in the book trade since the fifteenth century. This exhibition aims to shed light on female printers, publishers, and booksellers in the Library’s collection.
This presentation will outline examples of items in the exhibition and explore their cultural importance. These examples will be used to describe the research methods employed and demonstrate the challenges in locating women in the catalogue. It will show how this information can be added to the catalogue records and outline the benefits to enhancing the records thereby making the collections more discoverable and accessible to the research community.

Cleaning out our closets We were delighted with the end result a large study space created for students on Floor 2 With Library Space at a premium and more and more journals available electronically we could not justify having so many areas of the library taken up housing different journal collections. We decided to move all print journals available online electronically to our off-site store A Print Journal Archive was created with important print journals being added to this so that they could never be discarded Overlap analysis of all journal titles carried out to see what was available electronicallyperpetually, available electronically but not perpetually and not available at all electronically. Staff – Lack of Staff huge issue. Large team involved including part-time shelvers, Head of Collections, Collection Management Librarian, Operations Librarian and Stewarding team. Only one small library van which can only move 8 boxes at a time– 1 box=1 shelf Dirt and dust – Lots of very old and unused journals Space – Off site Store only has limited amount of space and creating space for specific class numbers is very time consuming 2016 A stock-take was carried out in the Off-site store in 2016 which created space so that journals could be moved there from Main Library where stock takes had been carried out over the preceding few years. May 2017 Overlap analysis by Head of Collections on Journals on Floor 1 and Floor 2 June -August 2017 Floor 1 discarding and journals taken from shelves to be moved to Off-site store Floor 2 discarding and moved to Floor 1 Floor 1 and Off-site Store stock move to make space for journals Summer spent moving, making space, fixing records and heavy lifting!
