Cloud Perspectives because timtowtsi theres more than one way to see it [pronounced: tim-totes-y] @ aneel
Who are you? Hi! IaaS User PaaS User SaaS User IaaS Provider PaaS Provider SaaS Provider IaaS HW/SW Vendor PaaS HW/SW Vendor SaaS HW/SW Vendor
What makes up the cloud depends on your perspective(s).. Cloud User Cloud Provider Cloud HW/SW Vendor ..who you are, who you serve, who serves you
You may be a user Could be a roomful of monkeys or a virtualized-automated-whatever.. I care a bit, but it could still be a roomful of monkeys as long as I get the functionality I want Data not stored on my machine, APIs, whatever HW makes me happy, an adminy interface, also a webby interface, some kind of scaling, pay per use, units of consumption something like image/vm size (cpu + mem) or storage or bandwidth or kinds of images or etc., access from lots of places and things An interface to some infrastructure I can build whatever the hell I want on IaaS User Could be a roomful of monkeys or a virtualized-automated-whatever.. I care a little more than the SaaS User but not enough to have a problem with the roomful of monkeys as long as I get the functionality I want Data not stored on my machine, APIs, whatever OS+Middleware makes me happy, a codery or developery (for those who can't code) interface, also a webby interface, some kind of scaling, pay per use, units of consumption being something like user per month or amount of use per unit time or objects or storage or etc., access from lots of places and things An interface to a platform I can build apps on PaaS User Could be a roomful of monkeys or a virtualized-automated-whatever.. I honestly don't care Data not stored on my machine, a webby interface (?), some kind of scaling, pay per use, units of consumption being something like seats or amount of use per unit time etc., access from lots of places and things An interface to an app I can use SaaS User Behind the Cloud Cloud Requires Cloud Is Perspective
You may be a provider The OS + middleware + dev platforms, actual application, oss/bss, management systems, databases, reporting/metrics that make up what I am providing and exposing -plus- the admins, devs, qa, support, customer support, sales, etc. that make up the human part of what I am providing Virtualization (maybe), Provisioning, automation, some kind of scaling, some level of orchestration, multi-tenancy, some level of metering granularity along some part(s) of the exposed application (and some of the platform / infrastructure?) for pay per use billing, service catalog ..or just a roomful of monkeys The application that I expose as a service SaaS Provider The hypervisor (maybe) + OS + middleware + dev platforms, oss/bss, management systems, databases, front end systems, reporting/metrics that make up what I am providing and exposing -plus- the admins, devs, qa, support, customer support, sales, etc. that make up the human part of what I am providing Virtualization (maybe), Provisioning, automation, some kind of scaling, some level of orchestration, multi-tenancy, some level of metering granularity along some part(s) of the exposed platform (and perhaps some of the infrastructure) for pay per use billing, service catalog ..or just a roomful of monkeys The platform packaging and parts that I expose as a service PaaS Provider The data centers, power, cooling, cabling, racks, servers, storage, networking, hypervisor platforms, oss/bss, management systems, databases, front end systems, reporting/metrics, internet links, inter-dc links, bandwidth, content delivery, optimization techs, load balancing, backup tech, recovery tech, replication tech, various sundry appliances, etc. that make up what I are providing and exposing -plus- the admins, devs, qa, support, customer service, sales, etc. that make up human part of what I are providing Virtualization, provisioning, automation, some kind of scaling, some level of orchestration, multi-tenancy, some level of metering granularity along some part(s) of the exposed infrastructure for pay per use billing, service catalog ..or just a roomful of monkeys The infrastructure packaging and parts that I expose as a service IaaS Provider Behind the Cloud Cloud Requires Cloud Is Perspective
You may be a vendor Is my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. My box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. Whatever sells my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. SaaS Vendor Is my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. My box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. Whatever sells my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. PaaS Vendor Is my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. My box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. Whatever sells my box, platform, hypervisor, OS, middleware, oss/bss, license, code, etc. IaaS Vendor Behind the Cloud Cloud Requires Cloud Is Perspective
Or some mix of the three Hi! IaaS User PaaS User SaaS User IaaS Provider PaaS Provider SaaS Provider IaaS HW/SW Vendor PaaS HW/SW Vendor SaaS HW/SW Vendor Hi! IaaS User & SaaS Provider (Consultants will love you.)
A brief note on what you call it. Most cloud conversations I see look something like this: Blah blah cloud blah Blah cloud blah blah Were having a conversation about the same cool thing! Blah blah barfoo blah Blah foobar blah blah Were having a conversation about.. I have no idea wtf youre talking about!!! So.. figure out what the other party is talking about regardless of what they call what they are talking about.
And on what Joe Weinman calls it. Cloud is油 C ommon, L ocation Independent,油 O nline,油 U tility, on- D emand.油 He contrasted this with another definition, Vapor =油 V irtualized,油 A utomated,油 P rovisioning,油 o f油 R esources.油 In Joes opinion, a complete private cloud implementation is vapor. [via Elemental Cloud Computing ] Im ~90% with Joe, except Id just say that private cloud implementations in typical enterprises will tend towards VAPOR.
