2. Austere(adj)
markedly simple lacking embellishment or
decoration
Ex. The rather austere d辿cor was softened by
early evening candle light.
3. Avarice(n)
excessive or insatiable desire for wealth or gain
Ex. He is to be her meal ticket for the rest of
her days, and she is motivated by avarice as
much as love.
4. Frugal (adj)
careful about spending money or using things
when you do not need to : using money or
supplies in a very careful way
Ex.Visitors were served a rather frugal fare in
the cistercian guesthall.
5. Mercenery (adj.)
one that serves merely for
wages; especially : a soldier hired into foreign
service
Ex. Mercenary troops were actually raised
from the very men who had bought
themselves out of feudal service.
6. Parsimonious(adj.)
Marked by extreme unwillingness to spend
money.
Our government tends to be parsimonious when
it comes to supporting scientific experiments
8. Thrifty
Def: careful about spending money and not
wasting things.
Sentence: A hard-working man and a thrifty
woman are the real treasures of any family.
9. Miserly money.
Def: hating to spend
Sentence: You must however, be careful not to become too miserly and
remember to be a little generous to yourself and those around you.
10. Adversity
Def: A state of hardship or affliction;
misfortune.
Sentence: Events may turn out contrary to what
was expected and great adversity may come.
11. Conflagration
Def: a large destructive fire.
Sentence: The church has two great treasures,
both of which survived the conflagration,
more or less.
12. Confounding
Def: the act of confusing.
Sentence: During our Summer SAT Course,
Domingo was confounded by the critical
reading questions.
13. Cryptic
Def: puzzling and ambiguous.
Sentence: The question was so cryptic that I did
not understand what it meant.
15. Enigma (n)
a riddle or mystery
Ex: Which came first, the chicken or the
egg? is one of the most common enigmas.
16. Labyrinth (n)
a confusing maze or a confusing situation
where it is difficult to know which direction to
take.
Ex: James kept on roaming the
labyrinth, unable to find his way out.
17. Precarious (adj)
dependent on forces or circumstances outside
one's control.
Ex: Ryan and Lin were pushing their way
through the precarious storm.
18. Quandary (n)
a state of perplexity or uncertainty
Ex: I am in a quandary as to whether we
should go on vacation this week or next week.
19. Turbulence (n)
disturbance, agitation
Ex: The hawk whisked at the lakes surface,
causing a slight turbulence.
20. Turmoil (n)
a state of great commotion, confusion, or
disturbance
Ex: It was obvious to everyone in the room
that she was in turmoil during the quiz.
