What do you want to be when you
grow up?
You can be whatever you want.
The opportunities we are given here in the United
States make that statement true. Inspired by the
American Dream, kids grow up with a passion for
competition and the ability to try new things to
figure out what exactly they want to do. In rural
Vietnam however, the kids do not have the exposure
to recreation sports, the encouragement to pursue
higher education, or the luxury of choosing their
path. Coach for College works to inspire youth to
take their destiny into their own hands and dare
greatly. Partnering American Student-Athletes with
Vietnamese University students CFC gives youth the
opportunity to play and to learn at a three-week
summer camp each year.
Who are you now, and what does
that mean?
At Advanced Facilitation training I was again
immersed into an entirely different culture, but this
time it was invented by the program Me to We. I
spent 10 days becoming intensely aware of my
privilege in our modern culture and global society.
Through modules, we defined not only our place in
the world, but how what we do affects the world
around us. We were exposed to the effects of desert
migration into the USA, the magic of permaculture,
the creation and success of counterculture, and the
travesty of inequality that is created by inherent
oppression. During this training I learned skills that
help me lead others in a unique way. We were
trained to facilitate conversations and activities in a
unique way that empowered individuals and groups
to come to new realizations and perspectives.

and think of us?
Each day at CFC we went to camp with one goal in mind:
Let’s help the kids learn something new, whether it was the
Doppler Effect in physics class, a two-touch pass in soccer, or
perseverance with a wall sit, we were happy because we were
giving kids the opportunity to be just that: kids.
I learned so much in Arizona at AFT, about the
world around me and my self. If there is one single
truth however, it is that you cannot have peace in
the world until you have peace within your self.

Megan Durham volunteered at public health organizations in Guatemala and Peru over two summers to explore career opportunities in public health and psychology. In Guatemala, she gave seminars on topics like hygiene and studied at a public health NGO, assisting a clinic with malnutrition evaluations. In Peru, she volunteered at a women's center that houses teenage mothers, helping in childcare and developmental activities. Going forward, she hopes to gain lab experience in cancer research or another science field through future enrichment projects.

Selfless in South America by Rachel GeilBrown Fellows Program

After returning to Louisville, Joey volunteered and observed local physicians to gain more exposure to medicine and maintain a focus on becoming a physician. The project successfully allowed Joey to volunteer internationally while also furthering short and long-term career goals in the medical field through domestic shadowing experiences.

Makerspaces are community-owned spaces where people collaborate by sharing ideas, knowledge and tools. They host workshops and talks and provide access to machinery. The Maker Movement began in the US in 2007 and has since expanded, with over 200 makerspaces currently operating. This study surveyed 25 makerspaces across 9 states to understand what activities they provide, how they are run, and who attends. The results found makerspaces focus more on education than entrepreneurship. Most are non-profits led by elected boards and officers. Membership sizes closely correlate with space size. The largest member groups are in IT and engineering fields, though females and non-whites tend to be underrepresented.

Billy Menkhaus spent spring 2013 interning in civil engineering in Panama City, Panama, working on major infrastructure projects like the Panama Canal expansion and metro rail system, while also volunteering with a medical mission. In fall 2013, he volunteered in Jinja, Uganda at a ministry for special needs children and with a water organization, gaining experience in humanitarian efforts. He hopes to return to Uganda to continue projects building a malnutrition clinic, playground, and water system, and helping his friends' ministry.

A Quantum Summber by Jonathan HuntBrown Fellows Program

This project involved research, language study, and historical exploration related to quantum mechanics. The student conducted original quantum mechanical research on pressure-induced hydrogen ionization with his professor, writing a paper on the topic. He studied German intensively for a month in Frankfurt, becoming proficient enough to qualify for German university programs. Finally, he traveled across Europe visiting sites important to the development of quantum mechanics, such as locations of early conferences and universities of prominent physicists. Through these three components, the student gained both academic and personal insights into his field of interest.

Kathryn Ashby completed a service trip to Cebu City, Philippines where she taught engineering lessons and helped install a water purification system. She then interned at GE Aviation developing additive manufacturing processes for jet engine parts. During her internship, she worked towards her private pilot's license, gaining flight experience across several states. Now she has a job at a startup focused on additive manufacturing software and plans to obtain more pilot certifications.

The PPI Analysis Project involved extracting index data for five-digit and six-digit NAICS industries from 2008 to 2013. The data was displayed graphically showing percentage changes in indexes starting from 2008. Correlation coefficients were calculated to measure how well six-digit industries moved with five-digit industries. The original project examined characteristics like sector and size that help explain how long establishments report prices to the PPI survey before quitting. Regression analysis found these characteristics impact attrition.

The student conducted research using transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the brain's role in human movement and behavior. Through tDCS, the student investigated whether stimulation could improve fine motor skills, with potential benefits for stroke patients. Matt Hughes studied Latin epigraphy with Dr. Kalin Stoev and traveled throughout the Roman Empire tracking and translating over 200 inscriptions. He spent time in the provinces of Britannia, Italia, Narbonensis, Mauretania, and Aquitania. Next, he plans to attend the American Academy in Rome's summer classical studies program. Hughes also spent five days at the University of Louisville learning about Roman burial practices and translating epitaphs from the Speed Art Museum collection which contains almost 200 unique inscriptions obtained from a cemetery near Rome.

Sara Loy spent her summer interning at Benjamin Press, an independent publishing house focused on tea texts. Her major project was editing The New Tea Companion, where she redesigned content and layout. She also traveled to research a Japanese tea jar in Washington D.C. and completed a part-time internship summarizing manuscripts for the University Press of Kentucky. Through her varied roles editing, designing, researching, and assisting, Sara gained experience in the publishing field and feels prepared to pursue a career in editorial work.

Aalok is a member of APM’s Thames Valley Regional Network and also speaks to members of APM’s PMO Interest Network, which aims to facilitate collaboration and learning, offer unbiased advice and guidance. Tonight, Aalok planned to discuss the importance of a PMO within project-based organisations, the different types of PMO and their key elements, PMO governance and centres of excellence. PMO’s within an organisation can be centralised, hub and spoke with a central PMO with satellite PMOs globally, or embedded within projects. The appropriate structure will be determined by the specific business needs of the organisation. The PMO sits above PM delivery and the supply chain delivery teams. I would not be the person that I am today with out their support. Also a special thanks to Dr. Elmaghraby, Andrew Grubb, and Dr. Karen Hadley for helping me formulate this plan and make this trip a reality. Previous Projects:  2011-2012: Gap Year: Volunteer, Student, & Teacher (Hopi, Colorado, New Orleans, Ecuador)  Summer 2012: Turkey: Student  Brown Fellows Class of 2016 group trip.  Summer 2013: Me to We: Volunteer & Student (Canada & Ghana)  Summer 2014: Coach for College: Volunteer & Teacher (Vietnam) Me to We: Student (Arizona) What do you want to be when you grow up? You can be whatever you want. The opportunities we are given here in the United States make that statement true. Inspired by the American Dream, kids grow up with a passion for competition and the ability to try new things to figure out what exactly they want to do. In rural Vietnam however, the kids do not have the exposure to recreation sports, the encouragement to pursue higher education, or the luxury of choosing their path. Coach for College works to inspire youth to take their destiny into their own hands and dare greatly. Partnering American Student-Athletes with Vietnamese University students CFC gives youth the opportunity to play and to learn at a three-week summer camp each year. Who are you now, and what does that mean? At Advanced Facilitation training I was again immersed into an entirely different culture, but this time it was invented by the program Me to We. I spent 10 days becoming intensely aware of my privilege in our modern culture and global society. Through modules, we defined not only our place in the world, but how what we do affects the world around us. We were exposed to the effects of desert migration into the USA, the magic of permaculture, the creation and success of counterculture, and the travesty of inequality that is created by inherent oppression. During this training I learned skills that help me lead others in a unique way. We were trained to facilitate conversations and activities in a unique way that empowered individuals and groups to come to new realizations and perspectives. World Map – Enrichment Projects, Service And Travel: Arizona, New Orleans, Colorado, Ecuador, Toronto, Ghana, England, Germany, Italy, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. We look back on slavery and the slave trade and cannot believe the cruelty of mankind. What will people look back to 300 years from today and think of us? Each day at CFC we went to camp with one goal in mind: Let’s help the kids learn something new, whether it was the Doppler Effect in physics class, a two-touch pass in soccer, or perseverance with a wall sit, we were happy because we were giving kids the opportunity to be just that: kids. I learned so much in Arizona at AFT, about the world around me and my self. If there is one single truth however, it is that you cannot have peace in the world until you have peace within your self.
