The Kaitlin A. Kazanjian Golf Tournament was founded by the Kazanjian family seven years ago after their 16-year-old daughter Kaitlin died in a car crash, to establish a scholarship fund benefiting children of Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office personnel for higher education or vocational training, as well as families who lost someone in the line of duty. The annual golf tournament has raised over $1.3 million total through sponsorships and donations. It allows the Kazanjian family and volunteers to honor Kaitlin's memory while helping hundreds of young people and families.

BEAM held a successful Back to School event that served almost 800 children from low-income families in the Jacksonville area. A tragic moment that took a 16 -year-old girls life has led to a benevolent annual event that benefits many young people and families whose loved ones work or served for the Palm Beach County Sheriffs Office. The Kaitlin A. Kazanjian Golf Tournament is a fundraising tradition that raises money for the children of police officers to aid in the cost of higher education or vocational training. Proceeds also go to families who lost someone killed in the line of duty. The Kazanjian family founded the scholarship program to serve as a charitable service and to honor their beloved daughters memory. Kaitlins essence is felt by her picture and name displayed on shirts, visors and banners distributed before and during the tournament. Perhaps all the great effort in the planning and execution of the event by the family and numerous volunteers help in the healing process that is crucial after experiencing such a dramatic loss. John Kazanjian, president of the Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association, heads the scholarship fund and started the event seven years ago after his daughter, Kaitlin died in a car crash. Because of media coverage of the tragedy and the court case that followed, public awareness and support for the fundraiser has spread rapidly. There was never a charitable organization initiated through the police union before this scholarship fund, Kazanjian said.
- 2. Over the years because of many sponsors, golf enthusiasts and volunteers, the scholarship fund has raised a total of $1.3 million with $140,000 given to recipients last year alone. Ray Griffith, a PBSO officer, has been a volunteer for five years and serves on the pre-event committee. Prior to the days activities, he determines how much product needs to be purchased, then he prepares and serves it. After the tournament, he works on the scholarship committee to interview recipients.It is a very enlightening, delightful and fulfilling experience. I am happy to do it, Griffith said. Typically about 300 to 350 people attend this golf tournament. Family, friends and business acquaintances of the PBSO and Kazanjians get together to raise money for 100s of young people and to financially assist family members of fallen police officers. From an emotional and personal perspective of the Kazanjian family, the most important goal is to honor the short lived life of their beloved daughter, Kaitlin.
