Codes and conventions are used in opening title sequences to signal the genre of the film to viewers and set expectations. Common codes include explosions for action films and deaths for horror films. Conventions like introducing main characters and setting help viewers identify the genre. The purpose is to provide the first impression, draw the audience in, and introduce key elements to strengthen their interest in the film.

Codes Codes are signs in which we associate with Genres, this would be the pictures in which I film would use for the viewer to come across that assumption. For example – Action genre using explosions. Codes help the audience as spectators decipher in which Genre the movie is. Used to drag the audience in!
Conventions Conventions are rules in which you must apply to the film to signify the Genre in which the movies is. For example – Horror genre people must die but one person will always survive. It may also show you the setting in which the film is this may also help the spectator to signify the Genre in which the movie may be. Also it will have sound/music. The use of this would help the viewer also to signify the film Genre and it will also set the atmosphere for the movie. Introduce the main characters giving their names. This would help bring in an audience because every spectator has their favourite actor/actress.
Purpose The opening titles are important because it is the first thing in which the spectators see and provides them with their first impression of any movie in which they would be viewing. They are used because they confirm or appose the expectations in which people may have of the film or certain genre. It is the first thins in which the viewer are likely to see so it is absolutely key that they get the opening sequence right ! Additional purpose of the opening titles is to drag the audience in and strengthen the interest in which they may have in the film. This is done by the use of the specific codes and conventions. Also purpose is to introduce the films the audience.
