Explain why your topic is important or worth discussing: Time is valuable, whether it’s now, participating in this presentation, or sitting in rush hour traffic. Americans spent an average of 4.2 billion hours or 500,000 years in traffic in 2007 collectively. This is a subject that affects people on a daily basis.
5. �ݺ�ߣ 5: Why should your audience listen to you? Explain your ethos (personal experience, expertise, and credibility): I graduated from an advanced motorcycle safety program at the top of my class. I have been a car driver for over 15 years and a motorcycle rider for over 10 years. I have been on both sides of the fence, and do not always support motorcyclists. I almost lost a close friend to a serious motorcycle accident and have seen the effects of reckless driving first hand. I am on the road 7 days a week, 365 days a year and 89% of the time I’m on my motorcycle.
6. �ݺ�ߣ 6: Call to Adventure (pages 38-39): Instead of getting red faced in traffic when you see a biker slip by, take that time to realize that the reason you made that last green light may be because a motorcycle gave you their spot in the line. Understand that we are going to be talking about real people. An average mid-sized sedan weighs around 3,600lbs. Your average motorcycle weighs around 600lbs with sport bikes even lower at 400lbs. So to be stuck in congested traffic at 120 degrees, with moving objects weighing 3,000lbs more than you is very risky. We all want to stretch our dollar these days, and for many, motorcycles are a tremendously cost effective means of transportation.
7. �ݺ�ߣ 7: Preview the three main points that will support your big idea: •The real truth about highway safety. Statistics don’t lie. •Stress on current infrastructure with a rapidly growing number of drivers. •Motorcycle safety and performance.
8. �ݺ�ߣ 8: Introduce and set up Supporting Point One: We all know that just about everything is safer than driving an automobile. Know imagine taking away 2 wheels, the magnesium alloy roll cage, 8 of 8 airbags, and traction control. Welcome to the world of a motorcyclist. A side from this, Motorcycles are a fantastic adventure of freedom, wind in your face and $400 a year in cheap insurance, $13 a tank of gas and for many, the only affordable mean of reliable transportation.
9. �ݺ�ߣ 9: Factual or emotional evidence: If lane sharing was allowed in all states, it is estimated that there could be 18,000 fewer rider injuries as a result. All indications are that lane sharing has the potential to be an effective motorcycle rider safety practice. The practice of lane sharing is just below helmet use on an effectiveness scale of motorcycle rider safety practices.
10. �ݺ�ߣ 10: Factual or emotional evidence: 84% of riders who have lane split, have never had contact with another vehicle It is estimated that 98-178 motorcycle rider lives could be saved by the use of Lane Sharing if the practice was universally allowed throughout the United States.
11. �ݺ�ߣ 11: Introduce and set up Supporting Point Two: Traffic congestion has worsened in the past few years and investing in local transit is going to be ineffective in the years to come. Smaller vehicles and motorcycles are the only real world solution to our booming population.
12. �ݺ�ߣ 12: Factual or emotional evidence: $750 per person in wasted fuel and productivity due to traffic congestion in recent years. In 1982 it was $290 per person in contrast (adjusted for inflation).
13. �ݺ�ߣ 13: Factual or emotional evidence: Americans spend anywhere around 15-70 hours a year stuck in traffic. If you have a 2 mile traffic jam and there are 15 motorcycles within that jam, that’s almost an entire football field that could be reduced from the traffic jam.
14. �ݺ�ߣ 14: Introduce and set up Supporting Point Three: For the most part, Motorcycles are no wider than your shoulders. The average distance to the car next to you in traffic is 6-8ft. That means, even at 6ft, a large motorcycle has about 24 inches, or 2feet on either side of them.
15. �ݺ�ߣ 15: Factual or emotional evidence: A 4-wheeled vehicle can absolutely turn faster than a motorcycle under 55mph. However, motorcycles can easily maneuver through the most congested traffic jams without putting others at risk.
16. �ݺ�ߣ 16: Factual or emotional evidence: In a 2011 research study, if was found that lane splitting motorcyclists are less likely to encounter an accident by a factor of 2:1 than none lane splitting motorcyclists. In the research paper, only 5 of 900 motorcycle accidents involved a lane splitting motorcycle.
17. �ݺ�ߣ 17: Call to Action (pages 42-43): Given the information addressed to my audience, I will have them identify how many times they have seen a motorcycle pass them during their daily commutes. Then I will ask them how many cars they see pass them on the breakdown lane or the HOV lane. Given the ability, would you expand the freeway and use a new lane? Of course you would.
18. �ݺ�ߣ 18: Summarize the main points: Review some of the stats again. Give the image of sweltering heat and a big truck stopped inches from your motorcycle. Safety. Reduce number of roadway accidents while freeing up the flow of traffic.

20. �ݺ�ߣ 20: Clincher/new bliss (page 44): At the end of the day, we all want to get to where were going. Lane Sharing is not only a great way to free up our roads in traffic, but we can also save the lives of countless future riders. Whether we ride for the enjoyment, or as our only affordable means of transportation, we cannot discriminate against our fellow travelers. Wouldn’t it seem a bit selfish to deny them the use of a perfectly suitable lane of travel? At the end of the day, we all want to get to where were going. Lane Sharing is not only a great way to free up our roads in traffic, but we can also save the lives of countless future riders. Whether we ride for the enjoyment, or as our only affordable means of transportation, we cannot discriminate against our fellow travelers. Wouldn’t it seem a bit selfish to deny them the use of a perfectly suitable lane of travel?
