Literacy and education rates in Colombia have improved substantially over time. The literacy rate among adults rose from 81% in 1993 to over 90% currently, though rural rates remain lower. School enrollment has also increased steadily at all levels, with over 95% of youth enrolled in primary school and over 70% in secondary school by 2000. However, dropout rates remain high in rural primary schools where teacher quality is poorer. Overall, Colombia has a growing economy, but income inequality remains high and corruption continues to be a challenge.
