1. COMPOSITION AS AN IN-SERVICE TEACHER
In every time in our lives arrives a moment where we
have to decide what to do in the future as adults,
what we want to be as professionals and we have to
decide what career is appealing to us. From that,
taking the first step to choose what I wanted to be
was not so difficult. I already had a background from
English and I had the passion for it. However, I realized
that if I were proficient in English I should choose a
career linked to the language and finally I decided that
Major in English was the right option for my future
academic life. What I didn´t do was to reflect about
whether I actually wanted to be an English teacher or
not, if I would enjoy being a teacher, the challenges I
had to face, what I had to teach, how to manage a
classroom, to realize what could be my actual role
being a teacher, what kind of learners I could find or I
would like to have. Surely, these previous questions
would help me to figure out if actually I had the
famous vocation.
2. Currently, I´m in seventh semester and I am doing my
second practicum, I already have experience in other
institution and I am working as an English teacher in a
local project. Although I have a previous experience, I
sometimes wonder why I am involved in this. I am
conscious what kind of career is this one and I
appreciate it so much. I know I am in the last period of
my career and I find that being a teacher is an
authentic challenge for all the life. However, I am sure
I want to be a teacher because I can change lives
through the use of other language where people feel
motivated expressing themselves about their
everyday life, improving their English background or
learning more about target language. For instance,
one of the greatest moments into the classroom is
when learners realize how important, useful and
entertained English language can be, when students
are able to greet you in English, when they are able to
ask you something using the English language and
when they can apply their learning strategies to get a
meaningful understanding in and out the classroom.
Something I love to do is when the topic is very
attractive to learners because it lets more interaction,
participation, contributions, reflections and questions
about what we are covering.
3. In the other hand, everything in education isn´t how
we want it works. First at all, the recognition and the
respect to the teachers in the society have felt down.
The salary paid to teachers in Colombia is not the
best, taking into account the great role of the teachers
in human beings. In addition, the politics which cover
teaching in Colombia aren´t appropriated and
contextualized, for those reasons, we as teachers have
to face a lot of problems into the classroom including
goals by the government which are very difficult to
get by students according to the Ministry of
Education, the quantity of students per classroom in
public institutions is other challenge for us as
teachers. Their context, their needs are very different
in comparison with what government wants to.
Moreover, into the classroom we aren´t only teachers,
we are sharing a single space with other worldviews,
perspectives, needs, likes, thoughts. All this context
force us to take not only a single role, but other roles
as parents, advisers, partners, psychologist, listener
and all of those roles involved into the social life
because of we are sharing knowledge and personal
experiences when we teach.
4. Finally, I see myself in my practicum as a teacher who
care about what I´m going to teach in the next class,
as I´m working with children, I always try to bring
appealing materials and activities that they actually
enjoy and learn through the practice, also I´m all ears
in their process, how they are learning, what they are
learning, how they are catching the information and
how they are using the language. For example, I have
noticed they are very visual and auditory; they get the
information easily through images and songs.
However I´m conscious I must to encourage other
learning styles. Something to emphasize is their
behavior into the classroom, when I arrive they get
excited. To be honest, they are the students a teacher
wishes to have, they love English, they practice it, they
have the motivation to it and learn easily. One aspect
to improve in my teaching practice could be the
dependency of the ICT use. Fortunately, the high
school has the technologic tools to implement in the
classroom, but I have to explore other alternatives to
teach without depend of these tools. As you have
noticed, being a teacher requires a deep vocation and
motivation to work with other people; and although
there are a lot of obstacles, after you see the positive
results surely you will figure out your job worth.
