India has only 4% of the world's fresh water resources to support 16% of the global population. By 2025, two-thirds of people worldwide will live in water-stressed conditions due to declining fresh water availability. In response, the Indian government declared 2013 the Water Conservation Year to promote strategies like rainwater harvesting, which increases water availability while protecting the environment and water tables. Common water conservation practices include fixing leaks, which account for 13.7% of residential water use, and reducing toilet, shower, and faucet water consumption.
