Lopez Jaena was born in 1856 in Iloilo to parents Placido Lopez and Maria Jacoba who worked as a general repairman and seamstress. He studied at St. Vincent Fererr Seminary in Jaro, Iloilo which had recently been opened under the administration of Governor General Carlos Maria de la Torre y Nava Cerrada. Marcelo H. del Pilar was born in 1850 in Cupang, Bulacan to Julian del Pilar and Biasa Gatmaitan and also went by the pen name Plaridel.
