Research, investigating technologys role in supporting

Steve began programming his first app, Spectrum Puzzles
in 2009. Intrigued by the then new Android Market (now
Google Play) and the open source developer tools, Steve
decided to see what he could create. Since then hes
become an expert in mobile development, and with his
background studying engineering and maths at Nottingham
University theres nothing he cant program.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: We have been involved with residential web sites for over 12 years. Our obsession with the common issues faced by communities living in managed blocks assisted by thousands of postings on our residents forums provide us with a view on how technology may play a huge role in addressing common issues of concern, such as noise, water leakage, security, energy usage and governance. It has also been the catalyst of a research project, led by Tom Lodge with the participation of Nottingham University and Microsoft Research, which is looking at the future role of technology in high rise and other managed residential buildings.
  • #4: We have a range of client types including Managing Agents, Residential Management Companies, Freeholders, and Residents Associations with close to 3,000 users over 38 residential communities.
  • #5: A content management system called Drupal provides our functionality. It enables us to build complex reliable online tools without reinventing the wheel. Drupal provides a group of core of services such as registration, record management and notifications that we were able to build on and tailor to very specific requirements for each development. Since Drupal is supported monitored and developed by a huge international community of talented programmers, help, if needed, is never far away.
  • #6: Drupal has an impressive list of users, which includes The White House, New York Stock Exchange, United Nations and NASA. It is used by a huge global collection of governments, universities, multinational companies and media.
  • #7: We are already providing a large range of functions and add new ones as and when they are required. Core functions are:- *Help Desk Enquiry forms. Registration/validation with particular emphasis on getting full details from tenants News that hits the home page and sends out copies via email Open forums for all residents and closed forums for owners and directors. (Forums can be valuable as a source of feedback, but should not encourage contributions from staff or management.) Optional Functions are:- Key release authorisation that ensures all questions are answered and risks of release are accepted by authorising resident (as used 100% at Ballymores Pan Peninsula building) Automated parcel notifications Pending deliveries. Noise reports (initial and repetition logging) Newsletters for all residents or owners only Calendar for events Classifieds & resident notices Virtual library to include appliance manuals.
  • #8: With Drupal we have huge control over types of content and who can view/add/edit/delete content. Residents for example cannot see details of fellow residents. Only authorised staff and management could access full resident details. Only the Estate Management staff can post/edit/delete news. Tenants cannot see contributions to an owners only forum nor could they advertise a property for let/sale.
  • #9: Creating and storing new types of records is quite straightforward. Records such as pool temperature logs, vehicles details, fob allocations, recommended suppliers, useful contacts etc.
