4. History
In 1924, the young Rotterdam architect J.P.L. Hendriks
won the prestigious Prix de Rome for fine architecture. This
bursary enabled him to spend a considerable amount of time
travelling throughout southern Europe to develop his talents
further. He spent four years roaming through South Tyrol and
Italy with his friend Van der Sluys, sketching and studying.
There is still a suitcase full of drawings of classical buildings
from Rome to Florence that Jan Hendriks brought back to the
Netherlands. On his return, he started his own company in
Rotterdam. After the war, he continued this firm as a partner-
ship with his brother-in-law L.A. van den Bosch. The last Rot-
terdam office after shifting location around the city various
times was on the Prins Hendrikkade on the Noordereiland
in the Seventies. By then the company was called Hendriks
Campman Tennekes Architects and also had offices in Gouda
and Nijmegen. In 1980 a new office was opened in Gouda.
The offices in Rotterdam and Nijmegen were then closed. In
Gouda, new generations succeeded one another under the
names Campman Tennekes de Jong, de Jong Gortemaker and
finally de Jong Gortemaker Algra architects and engineers. At
the end of 2005, Architectengroep Duintjer BV in Amsterdam
was added to this. In 2007, both agencies were merged in the
new office Las Palmas in Rotterdam.
