Submarine geothermics. hydrothermal vents and electricity generationjjsoto00
油
This document discusses generating electricity from submarine hydrothermal vents. Researchers from UNAM designed prototypes to install small power plants on hydrothermal vents using binary cycle technology. They estimated that 1% of known vent sites could generate around 130,000 MW of electricity without harming ecosystems. This is comparable to electricity from other geothermal sources. Specific vent sites studied in Mexico include areas in the Gulf of California with temperatures over 360属C and shallow vents along the Pacific coast. One vent could potentially generate up to 20 MW without affecting the environment.
Natural gas hydrates contain large quantities of methane trapped within ice crystal structures. Exploring and producing natural gas hydrates faces challenges related to their compact structure, formation factors, and location within stability zones. Initial production tests at the Mallik gas field involved depressurization and achieved flow rates up to 160 Mcf/day with minimal water production, demonstrating the potential for natural gas hydrate production but also issues like sand ingress. Replacing methane with carbon dioxide offers an alternative production method due to CO2's more favorable thermodynamic properties and easier distribution within the hydrate crystal structure.

Harnessing geothermal power in islands and remote areas: The Pico Alto geothe...exergyorc
油
Remote areas such as islands and rural regions often face major challenges to get access to electricity, most rely on diesel generators or heavy fuel engines that implicate the use of fossil fuels causing higher economical costs for governments and growing environmental impact. Geothermal resources on volcanic islands and remote areas can represent today a viable solution to create an efficient and sustainable energy model producing electricity for local needs by means of a renewable source available 24/7. Exergy presents the 4 MW Pico Alto geothermal power plant located on Terceira Island, meeting up to more than 10% of the local energy needs and approximately 25% of the local baseload.
This document discusses using thermocline manipulation to remediate mercury in contaminated reservoirs. Thermocline manipulation was previously used successfully in Finland to reduce methylmercury levels. The document proposes applying this approach to reservoirs in Utah by using mixing equipment to depress the thermocline. Baseline data from Newcastle Reservoir shows high mercury levels in fish. The objectives are to model thermocline behavior, determine optimal pumping locations and rates, conduct a field experiment to assess impacts on mercury levels in water, sediment and biota. A multi-year plan is outlined to collect baseline data, conduct the pumping experiment, and evaluate results to determine if wider implementation is warranted.

Geothermal energy is heat from within the Earth that can be used to generate electricity. It is extracted from hot water or steam underground. The heat comes from radioactive decay and residual heat from the Earth's formation. Some areas have naturally occurring hot springs or geysers that provide easy access to the geothermal heat. Electricity can be produced in facilities using dry steam, flash steam, binary cycle power plants, or other technologies. Geothermal energy has benefits like being renewable and having less environmental impact than fossil fuels, but also has some disadvantages like high initial costs and possible ground stability or noise issues.

Developer Experience is Dead! Long Live Developer Experience!
In this keynote-style session, well take a detailed, granular look at the barriers to productivity developers face today and modern approaches for removing them. 10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, The Coding War Games.
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method, we invent to deliver products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches works? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today so we dont have the same discussion again in a decade?
Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr辰nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
油
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moores Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.
