In 1903, Benny and Smith Inc. created the first crayon in the United States in Easton, Pennsylvania. However, this early crayon was low quality and not safe for children. Crayons were also independently invented in France by Nicolas Jacques Conte. The first color created was blue and the name "Crayola" comes from the French words for chalk and oily.
