CROATIA
Ante Čačić was happy to have Mandžukić and Modrić in shape for this game, as
the 2 stars have missed the last game in the group matches stage against Spain.
In the middle, Modrić and Badelj keep their dynamic and worked really well
controling the Portugal´s counter attacks.
In the back, Strinić didn’t get many chances to attack, but in the right, Srna was in
great shape and played really well both attaking and defending.
Upfront, Mandžukić struggled against Pepe and Fonte, and it was clear he wasn’t
100%.
Perišić, Rakitić and Brozović, gave the pace the team needed. Rakitić was well
marked by the portuguese midfield and when Renato Sanches got in the game,
Rakitić suffered with his agressivity.

Dynamics
Croatia opted to play inside portuguese lines and create
space in the back of the defense, exploring the through
pass.
In the counter attack, they explored more the 1-on-1
situation, specially in the wings.

Shots
Dynamics
Croatia shoted a lot, but most of the shots were from
outside the box. This shows some lack of accuracy, with
17 shots and only 2 were on target.
Perišić, usually coming from behind and taking
advantage of the 1-on-1 situations was the man who
shooted the most with 7 shots.
Mandžukić, the biggest reference in the attack, only shot
twice, revealing the struggle he had against the
portuguese center backs.

PORTUGAL
Fernando Santos made 3 changes in Portugal´s team. 2 of them, were debuts in
this European championship – Adrien Silva (midfielder) and Cédric Soares (right
back).
Portugal opted to maintain the dynamic that Nani and Ronaldo revealed against
Hungary and were both in the line up, relegating Quaresma for the bench.
In the middle, Adrien Silva replaced João Moutinho due to physical condition.
This change gave Portugal more physical hability to face a strong Croatia.
In the back, Cédric replaced Vieirinha. Cédric doesn’t attack as much as
Vieirinha, but has more consistancy on the defensive process.
In the left, Raphael Guerreiro started the game, after missing the game with
Hungary in the group matches stage.

Dynamics
Portugal opted for a 3-player construction phase, but
with low pace, Croatia controled Portugal.
With Renato, he transported the ball closer to Croatia
lines, and started to creat numeric advantage in the
middle – supported by João Mário, Adrien and
sometimes Nani. The goal is due to a counter attack,
with Renato doind this transporting perfectly.

Shots
Dynamics
Portugal had some problems with the offensive process,
which resulted in a low shooting number with only 4
shots the entire game.
This is due specially to the fact that Ronaldo was lost
between the defenders, not being so influent as he
usually is, in the last third.
With Renato on pitch, Portugal get closer to the
opponent´s area, but with few players they didn’t get
many chances to get Subašić in trouble.

Set Play
Dynamics
João Mário takes the corners as well as Quaresma.
Although Portugal had benefit from 30 corners in the
group matches stage (average of 19), in this game they
only benefit from 2, revealing the struggle to reach the
goal of Croatia.
Raphael from the left and João Mário from the right,
were chosen to take the Indirect Free Kicks.
The targets were Pepe, José Fonte and Ronaldo.
Chosing the center of the area to put the ball, Portugal
was trying to creat the doubt between the defenders and
the goalkeeper, and take advantage of some
communication mistakes.

The Goal
Portugal
The counter attack worked really well, taking advantage of
the space in the middle, with Renato taking the ball to the
last third. There, he fixed the defender perfectly and puts
the ball on the left for Nani.
Quaresma and Ronaldo were clever enought to
understand the importance of the opposite side of the ball -
as the ball was crossed they’re already there, so Ronaldo
first and Quaresma later, made the winning goal for
Portugal
