Cultural Defferenes In Nonverbal Communication
Gesture and Body Positioning
Facial Expressivenes
Eye Contect
Conversitional Distence
Nonverbal differnces across culture that maybe a source of confusion
for foreigner.
 To express grief
The arab and iranian cultures, people express it openly. But not for,
china and japan are more subdued.
Example:
 Feeling of friendship or affection
In some countries to express a friendship is acceptable for men to
embrace and for women to hold. In other countries the display of
affection are not discouraged and prohibit.
Gestures are specific body movements that carry meaning.
Example:
Beckoning people to come with the palm up is comon in United
State. This same gesture in Philippines, Korea, and some of Latin
America as well as other countries is considered rude.
O.K. gesture in the American culture is a symbol for money in
Japan.
Many American business executives enjoy relaxing with their
foot up on their desks. But to show a person from Saudi Arabia
or Thailand the sole of ones foot is extrimely insulting because
the foot is considered the dirtiest part of the boddy.
Facial expression carry meaning that is determined by situation and
relationship.
Example:
In American culture the smile is typically an expression of pleasure. Yet
also has other function; a smile may show affection, convey politness, or
disguise true feeling
A womans smile at a police officer does not carry meaning as the
smile she give to a young child.
Many people in Russia consider smiling at strenger in public to
be unusual and even suspicious behavior. Yet many Americans
smile freely at strengers in public places (although this is less
common in big city).
Our face reveal emotions and attitude, but it maybe defference from each
culture in every country.
Dont try to judge people whose way s of showing emotion are different.
Eye contect is important. Because insusfficient and excessive eye contect
can create communication barriers.
Patterns of eye contect are deffernct across country.
In Unitited State , there are no specific rules governing eye behovior,
except that it is considered rude and stare, especially at stranger
The relationship between the lack of eye contect and mistrust in
American culture is stated directly in the expression.
Unconsciously, we all keep a comfortable destence around us when we
intrect with other people.
The amount of the space changes depending on the nature of the
relationship.
Example:
Whe are usually more comfortable stending closer to family member
than strengers.
Personality determines the size of the area which we are comfortable
when talking to people.
For American, the usual distence in social conversation renges from
about an arms length to four feet.
