Math
Routines in
2nd Grade
Katie Smart
CSE 627
This presentation is designed to introduce:
Our objective for the year
The math routines in 2nd grade
Team expectations
Examples of math units and centers
Objective
With your grade level team, you will evaluate the
Common Core State Standards to create math units and
centers to coincide with the standards.
Example of Objective:
CCSS- 2.MD.C.7 Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the
nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
Student Learning Target- I can tell time from a digital and analog clock to the
nearest five minutes using a.m. and p.m.
Math Center- Cracking Time- Students will work with a partner to match each
analog and digital clock together from the pieces of the egg.
Math Routine
As a team we will decide on the best math structure to use in teaching our new
curriculum.
FIRST IDEA
The Schedule:
25 minutes: Lesson Introduction/Focus
25 minutes: Partner or Independent Work/Game/Activity
20 minutes: Math Stations*
*Students will rotate through the different stations throughout the week. It should
take about two weeks to get through every stations.
Math Stations
As we create our units we will create math centers that align with each lesson. Math
centers are beneficial in many ways.
Math centers allow:
Students to manipulate the concept in different ways
Students to get up and moving
Students to collaborate with one another
Students to peer teach
The teacher to pull students for intervention and re-teaching
Working as a Team
The strength of the team is each individual member.
The strength of each member is the team.
- Phil Jackson
Team Expectations

Share Ideas
Be Open Minded
Create Together
Respect Others

Much of this content was created for my CSE 626 class but I decided to put it in
presentation format like I would be showing this to my grade level team this
coming school year.
