This document describes the development of a microfluidic device to profile phototrophic purple sulfur bacteria in situ in the water column of anoxic lakes. Purple sulfur bacteria are important to study as they were some of the first organisms to utilize photosynthesis without oxygen. However, they are difficult to locate and extract from their native habitat. The researchers designed a device with light and thermal sensors to detect and extract samples of purple sulfur bacteria from a specific depth in the water column. They tested the light absorption and fluorescence properties of the bacteria and used this information to design a light detection scheme. The author collected DNA samples from different aquatic environments and used PCR to amplify transposase genes and 16S rRNA gene fragments. This study evaluated the toxicity of silver nanoparticles on Daphnia magna. Results showed that toxicity depends on nanoparticle concentration, with mortality extremely increasing beyond 8.6 ppb. However, toxicity of nanoparticles was lower than silver ions, which increased mortality at 5 ppb. Pei-Ching Huang has studied life sciences at National Yang Ming University in Taiwan, earning a B.S. in 2014 with high honors. She has gained extensive research experience in cancer drug development and the role of proteins in tumorigenesis.
