1) Operation Overlord was the code name for the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Over 150,000 troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of coastline in Normandy, France.
2) Airborne troops played a key role, confusing the Germans, protecting the flanks of troops coming ashore, and capturing targets to secure exits from the beaches. Over 20,000 American and British airborne troops landed behind enemy lines.
3) The landings faced resistance from fortified German positions, especially at Omaha Beach. Rough seas also caused problems for some troops. However, the Allies were eventually able to gain a foothold and push inland from the beaches.
