Daedalus and Icarus
Daedalus
Daedalus was an ingenious
inventor. He was expelled from

Athens for killing his nephew
for surpassing his inventive
genius. He ended up in Crete
where he served King Minos
and Queen Pasiphae.
The Labyrinth
Daedalus was given a task to build the Labyrinth, a maze which was
suitable to imprison the men eating monster, Minotaur.
King Minos imprisoned his enemies in the labyrinth, left them to be
killed by the monster.
• The daughter of Minos, Princess Ariadne fell in love with Theseus,
one of the prisoner in the labyrinth.
• Daedalus advised Princess Ariadne to give Theseus the thread that
helped him escape the Labyrinth, after killing the Minotaur.
Minos was infuriated knowing about the betrayal
of Daedalus so he imprisoned him in a high tower
in the Labyrinth along with his son Icarus.
Knowing that his architectural
creation was too complicated
to escape from. Daedalus
thought that even if they
could come out of the maze,
the sea shores of Crete would
still trap them, thus, the only
way out was through the air.
Daedalus managed to create
gigantic wings with wax and
feather. He taught Icarus how
to fly, and told him to keep
away from the sun so the wax
would not melt.
The flight of Daedalus and Icarus was the first time that man
managed to fight the laws of nature and beat gravity.
They set off for freedom. At first everything went well, but after a
while Icarus got tired, instead of flying up and down, he kept on
going up, higher and higher. Suddenly he realized his wings really
were melting!
His wings came apart, and he fell down into the ocean, where he
drowned. Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name,
the Icarian Sea near Icaria, an island.
