Jonathan got a hearing aid but failed to properly care for it, falling asleep with it in and not cleaning it regularly. This led to a buildup of wax and germs in his ear, causing a hearing infection with symptoms like headaches. The document warns that hearing devices must be properly cared for through regular cleaning to avoid such infections, and stresses the importance of keeping both the hearing aid and ear canal clean.

Dangers from hearing device misuse and improper care
1. Dangers from Hearing Device Misuse and Improper
Care
Because stories explain it so much
better¡ªwe use the following illustration
to explain the importance of caring for
your hearing device.
Although hearing devices can bring back
a dulled sense of hearing when used
properly, when misused hearing aids
can do even more damage. That¡¯s why, when my friend Jonathan
got his hearing aid, his audiologists tested him to determine
which hearing aid worked best for him and provided him with
information on hearing aid insertion, removal and care.
After he started using it, Jonathan complained a lot about
headaches. He said that everything sounded too loud and
jumbled together, and he didn¡¯t like being in public for more than
a couple of hours at a time.
Jonathan got used to the way the hearing aid made things sound
and finally got comfortable wearing it, but with comfort came
laziness. He would fall asleep with his hearing aid in and he was
bad about cleaning it when he took it out. When Jonathan started
getting headaches again, he thought there was something wrong
with the device, but what Jonathan had was a hearing infection
caused exclusively by the misuse and improper care of his
hearing device. While this is a story¡ªyou can see the importance
of caring for your hearing device.

2. According to the doctors, when a person doesn¡¯t follow a proper
care regimen with his or her hearing device, the device may
cause wax build-up inside the ear, and a dirty hearing aid
transports germs and dirt into the ear canal where it can lead to
infection, which causes symptoms like the headaches that
Jonathan suffered. So, it¡¯s important to keep both the hearing aid
and ear canal clean.
Keep hearing devices clean with at least a nightly wipe-down with
a dry cloth, and occasional deeper cleaning, and keep your ear
canals clean with at-home ear-cleaning solutions or regularly
scheduled cleanings with your hearing aid professional.
