Giant anteaters are mammals known for eating ants and termites. They use their long claws to open insect colonies and tree trunks, then use their long, sticky tongue to collect eggs, larvae and adult insects, consuming thousands per minute. Though they mainly eat insects, they may also eat fruit and eggs. Jaguars and cougars prey on giant anteaters, but their main defense is to run away. Humans also threaten anteaters through hunting and vehicle collisions.
