Lim Bo Seng left his family in Singapore in February 1942 intending to hide in Sumatra until it was safe to return, but instead found himself permanently separated from his family. He escaped to Padang on Sumatra's west coast, where he connected with several thousand British, Indian, and Australian troops waiting to be evacuated from Singapore. Lim was evacuated with the troops on Australian warships to Colombo, eventually arriving in Chongqing, China on April 12, 1942, two months after leaving Singapore.
