Fractions can be used to describe parts of a whole or parts of a group. There are three main types of fractions: part-whole fractions, quotient fractions, and ratio fractions. Part-whole fractions describe a number of equal parts out of a whole, like 1/2. Quotient fractions show the result of one number divided by another, like cookies divided among people. Ratio fractions compare two quantities, like the width to length of a shape. Understanding fractions is easiest when taught with real-world examples using objects divided into parts.
