Digital Production Unit - FY2015

Editor's Notes

  • #2: a bit longer than 10min Im going to get to strategic activities and goals a bit later in this. and those goals for me are a bit more fundamental in nature. But first I wanted give you a bit of background to the challenges that Ive encountered coming into an established digital production unit. retreat last year some of this could've gone into a
  • #3: Interview day met people not dpu (except patti) busy day and i was whisked away from meeting room to meeting room and there wasnt a whole lot of time for meeting DPU staff. I just assumed i had an idea of what goes on in a digital production unit and the expertise that can be found there
  • #4: Maybe Deanne Bruner was the photo specialist?
  • #5: Maybe Alice Mang had experience with audio? as the summer of 2012 proceeded, I realized that the digital production unit staff had little to do with digital production. dpu staff deposited files into SA or contentdm. certainly a related and valuable process but its not really digital production - its the logical and obvious next step.
  • #6: So who is doing the digital production?
  • #7: Its the students.
  • #8: maybe not these students too young
  • #9: these guys theyve got smart phones and twitter accounts
  • #10: of course theres much more to than resolution and file format. Since digitization had been all figured out that meant that DPU staff could focus on cataloging/metadata work which meant that I was going to be spending much of my time managing ScholarsArchive deposits
  • #11: After meeting with the students and seeing how they were working, how long projects were taking, and the quality level of the work, I knew that I needed to make some changes. I have a feeling that I was hired because of my experience and not despite it. The first challenge for me was figuring out how to bring our digitization standards up to a minimal level.
  • #12: Knowing that osu libraries participated in this project at how to approach archives and special collections digitization this looked at the bigger picture of digitization and delivery as it relates to resource usage. (staff time) rights issues scanning levels quality control delivery
  • #13: - exclusively text-based document sheet feed scanning (mostly theses and dissertations) bouncing back and forth from the middle to outside track high quality control (involving a number of staff) photos below inside track of course scan and deliver is all about special collections and archives items and wasnt intended to be applied to something like a theses
  • #14: I dont think that anyone believes that a table of contents page from a 1992 theses is more valuable than a 100 year old glass plate negative. in terms of resource being used - it seemed to be the case I just wanted to apply a bit of logic to how we approached work and how to be more efficient. we had to do better upcoming glass plate negative digitization project involved glass negative projects previously knew the issues, the established standards in terms of digitization, materials handling, and knew what a successful project looked like. As I was thinking about this project and the resources that I had, i realized that I was going to have to do the digitization myself. as challenging as it was going to be (chaos of moving to DSpace 3.0). I have to say that Michael has been very understanding about the issues Im faced with.
  • #15: previous dpu gifford digitization Ezra Meeker Washington pioneer, successful hops farmer, merchant, and an influential advocate for preserving the Oregon Trail looks fine right? For me, having the negative in my hands and seeing all the detail/information that was there, I knew that I could do much better.
  • #16: you can see the differences
  • #17: I might point out that the quality level of the scanner was pretty much the same mine was done on the newer model of this very same scanner. less than 8min to get my scan too much contrast / all the detail is gone When youre talking about digitization and archival materials, theres an ethical component to it. You should make every effort to accurately capture the information. This is doubly true for something as fragile as a glass plate negative.
  • #18: I like the work that Tom, Ryan wick, Trey, and everyone at UO have done with Oregon Digital.
  • #19: I do think that its put us in a situation where the digital object is suddenly front and center. With a great way to inspect the item; zoom and pan. theres no hiding behind contentdms crappy image viewer
  • #20: the details are going to be important It seems that were heading in a certain direction with our digital collections and I see it as one of my main responsibilities to ensure that the level of our digital production matches the level of Oregon Digital. I have to say that I feel very fortunate to have Erin Clark working with me as we take this on over the next 12 months.
  • #21: strategic goals most obvious ones What does accessibility mean? - increase number of SCARC collections through Oregon Digital
  • #22: for myself and DPU that means increasing our throughput doing things on a larger scale that also means expanding the types of materials that we can successfully work with
  • #23: we cant do it all at once its something to work towards
  • #24: earlier this year anne asked me about digitizing illuminated manuscripts
  • #25: there are tons of linus pauling three dimensional models in SCARC 3d scanner? maura me
  • #26: i realize that this might be reaching a bit but maybe not maybe we could get up close and personal with vitamin c
  • #27: Does all this highly technical work means that DPU and Brian is going to have to work faster. im the first to say that once you make the decision to do your work faster then youve lost the game
  • #28: within my unit i see a few instances of misdirected time uses ive worked to redirect processes and need be, shift those to a student
  • #29: staff training is something thats been a little problematic but there have been some successes Patti has Photoshop installed on her computer and is actively using it.
  • #30: maybe this is just me conflating the two meanings of the word accessibility but I also see how the some of the processes that we perform on a file can make something more accessible in terms of usability
  • #31: PDF/A idea is to preserve PDF contents over an extended period of time no external dependencies - embedded fonts - device-independent colorspaces av content/scripts are forbidden drawbacks (larger file sizes)
  • #32: ive luckily been able to automate much of this so that its not something that dpu students or staff really have to worry about. although I wish that there was a better understanding of what PDF/A means.
  • #33: Also doing minimal ADA accessibility tagging this adds logical document and sentence structures that screen readers can work with. play video we are not only doing this with textual documents we scan for SA but also for any text-based file we produce. he have a large number of hops reports that we did for Tiah and those are PDF/A and have accessibility tags
  • #34: Goal 3 long-term digital preservation system We need to be producing files worthy of preserving? And Im not necessarily talking about the differences between quick access-level digitization and high quality preservation-level digitization. Although that certainly can be factored in. What Im talking about is a bit more fundamental. refer back to my first presentation
  • #35: - capture-related metadata validating files checksums (no file movement errors or unauthorized edits) look for ways to automate? shell scripts at the very least I need to have a bit of help with some of this Erin is the likely person
  • #36: Aside from staff technical skills equipment wish-list dedicated negative/slide scanner
  • #37: professional quality book scanner
  • #38: new building router and new switches around the building working with OSUs shared infrastructure group on a better storage solution for our archival files i hope that over the next year we can expand the material types we can work with, expand the technical skills of DPU staff, and align/sync our workflows with other parts of the digital collections process. Acknowledging that digitization is something that matters developing staff expertise scaling our digitization to meet needs developing a beginnings of a sustainable digital preservation system
