accepted behavior in
particular social groups
or social situations
What is the Difference between Eating and Dining ?


 Dining is an art !
 When you eat, you only please the palate.
PRE-DINING ETIQUETTE
Punctuality
   Be on time - no one wants
  to be kept waiting.
   If it is an unavoidable
  delay, try to contact the
  person.

Greeting and Introduction
  A good and firm handshake
  is important.
Know how to use a standard table setting .
Getting Seated
 Never take your seat
before being invited to do
so by your host.
 The Gentlemen must
always help the lady to be
seated first.
 Always take your seat
from the left side of the
chair
 Wait until everyone is
seated before eating.
How to use Napkin ?
 Place your napkin on your lap after everyone at your
table has been seated.
 Do not open your napkin in mid-air.
 When a meal is completed, place your napkin to the
right of your plate - never on the plate.
Dining Posture

 Sit straight and try not to lean
on the table.
 Keep your elbows off the table
and close to the body when you
are eating.
 However, when you stop to
talk, it is okay to rest your elbows
on the table and lean forward.
How to use the utensils(Silverware) ?
 If a piece of silverware
drops, leave it and ask for a
replacement from your
server.
 Silverware should not
touch the tablecloth once
used.
 Place knife at the top of
the dinner plate, facing in,
after use.
 When you are finished,
place your knife and fork in
the center of your plate.
Handling Utensils
Serving Food

 Do not reach across the table
for an item - politely ask the
person next to you to pass.
 Pass food to the right
 Plates are served on the left.
 Pass the salt and pepper
together.
Dining
 Wait until everyone is
seated before eating.
 When dining with others,
everyone should start and
finish at the same time. If you
are a fast eater try to pace
yourself.
 You could make the others
feel uncomfortable if you finish
before they do.
 When you are finished
eating do not push your plate
away from you.
Offer food to the left
and then help urself
 Take small bites, keep your
mouth closed and finish chewing
before continuing your
conversation.
 Try not to gulp your food, it
isn't very attractive.
 Do not blow on food that is
hot. Wait until it cools or eat from
the side of the bowl, when
having soup.
 Cut meat one piece at a time
 Rest silverware on your plate
when speaking
Excusing Yourself and Problems

 Be discrete if you have problem with the food.
 Remove food the same way it went in-on silverware.
 Excuse yourself, if you have to leave the table.
 Turn your head from the table when you cough or
sneeze.
Paying the Bill

You should prearrange how the bill is being paid.
If being treated by someone, always thank them.
Avoid struggling about who gets the bill.

 Do remember the proper table manners.
 Do try a little of everything served to you unless you
know youre allergic to a
certain food.
 Do avoid talking with your mouth full.
 Do take small bites.
 Do remove an object such as a bone or gristle from
your mouth with your thumb and index finger and place
it on the rim of your plate.

 Do butter bread on the plate, never in midair.
 Do take a quick sip of water if a bite of food is too
hot.
 Do wait until you have swallowed your food in your
mouth before you take a sip of you beverage.
 Do leave dropped silver on the floor. Quietly signal
the wait staff to bring another
piece.
 Do look into, not over the cup or glass when
drinking.
Don'ts During Dining

 Dont overload your plate.
 Dont overload the fork.
 Dont mop your face with your napkin.
 Dont spread your elbows when cutting
meat. Keep them close to your sides when
eating.
 Dont chew with your mouth open.
 Dont saw the meat in a back and forth
motion. Stoke it toward you.
