A community leader wrote to Canopy's director, Catherine, to congratulate her and her staff on organizing a successful tree planting event. Though he initially thought the large number of volunteers would result in chaos, everything ran smoothly due to Catherine's knowledgeable and friendly staff. The event was educational, satisfying, and fun for all who attended.

Hi Catherine, I'm writing to congratulate you and your staff
on a fantastic job of organizing and carrying out today's
planting. I must admit that when I saw how many people
had gathered, I thought there was no way to avoid total
chaos. In fact, however, things ran very smoothly, and all
your people were not only knowledgeable, but also very
friendly and helpful. In short, it was educational, satisfying,
and fun, and I'm sure everyone there will volunteer again.

Questions?
Editor's Notes
#2: Intro stuff perhaps on note card -
Dana specifically said . so
#4: Its about organizing really large plantings when you have a disproportionately small staff and about managing a planting and tree care program and building your capacity so that little about
When I showed up, Canopy was at 2.5, but in the previous two years they had planted 1200 trees
#5: What follows are some things (tools) that Ive used to help organize big plantings
#6: This sends a message to your Volunteers even if its not strictly necessary - They like feeling like you have everything under control
#10: I was resistant, and I still dont always use it, but its great for piece of mind.
#16: Auger could be a back hoe
The hook is so much more portable than a dolly
#21: Ravenswood for some reason gave us the go ahead, trusted us, then left us alone. Quite rare.
#23: My experience is in CA
Its possible to rely on hand watering. Things like Cocoon.
Its expensive. Would be awesome to do with volunteers
Issues with coordinating with contractors and paying for easy fixes
Adapting them now and ideas for the future very briefly
#25: Mostly to say there is a lot more that goes into this than the programs side Communications and Development
#27: partner org does food - water and granola
If you have someone like CM, make sure they are in the know
