PERSONAL SAFETY FOR WOMEN 11 PERSONAL SAFETY TIPS Presenter Don Moe
Expect the unexpected, Suspect the unusual!
1. 3 REASONS WHY WOMAN ARE TARGETED Lack of awareness: You must know what types of environments you are in and whats going on around you. Body Language: Keep your head up, stand up straight, walk confidently. Wrong place: If possible do not walk alone, avoid bad neighborhoods
2. GETTING INTO VEHICLES SITTING, DOING LISTS, OR CHECKBOOKS. Allows for predator to gain entry w/o notice or ability to react. Get into the vehicle immediately lock the doors and leave the area. Prior to entering your vehicle: Look around the area, look into the car, at passenger side floor, and in the back seat. (Check under the car also.) Look at the car parked near your drivers side door, and passenger side door. If a male is alone in the seat near your vehicle, you may want to walk back to the mall, or work and get security or employee to walk back with you.
Case Example A man tells of a story of his daughter who came out of the Mall and was walking to her car when she noticed two older ladies in front of her walking to their car. She saw a police car come towards her with 2 cops, who said hello. She also noticed that all 8 handicap spots were empty. As she neared her car, she saw a man a few rows over calling to her for help. He wanted her to close his passenger side door. He was sitting in the drivers side and said he was handicapped. He continued calling until she turned and headed back to the Mall, then he began to curse her. She began to ask herself, why didnt he ask the two older ladies, or the Police for help. And why wasnt he parked in the open handicap spots? She returned with two male friends and pointed to the car. The man was getting out of the backseat into the front and sped off.
QUESTION: WHAT WAS HE PLANNING TO DO! What are some things you can do?
3. ALWAYS TAKE THE ELEVATOR INSTEAD OF THE STAIRS. Do not enter elevator if you feel uncomfortable with someone that is on already. ( Trust Intuition) Stand near the front by elevator door when entering. Stay away from the back of elevator. If someone gets on that makes you uncomfortable, get off on that floor and take another elevator.
EXAMPLE : You enter the elevator to go to your hotel room on the 6 th floor. It stops on the 5 th floor and several intoxicated and rude males enter the elevator. What do you do?
4. IF THE PERSON HAS A FIREARM & YOU ARE NOT UNDER HIS CONTROL. RUN!!! Studies show the likely hood of being struck if shot at is less than 4 in 100 times. Most likely, injury will be non-threatening. Police miss, 6 out of 10 times within 3 to 9 ft. Try running in a zig zag pattern and use obstacles as you run as barriers between you and the offender.
CASE EXAMPLE: The attacker threatens to shoot you if you attempt to escape. You create a distraction. What do you do?
5. WOMEN ARE CONDITIONED TO BE NICE. WHEN SAFETY IS COMPROMISED, DO NOT BE NICE! Ted Bundy, used the ruse of a cane, walked with a limp. He was good looking. He would ask a woman for Help getting into his car. That is when he would attack. Not all men are out to take advantage of you. For your own safety, any unrequested approach or request to help you should be disregarded. Ask yourself: Why did they approach you in the first place. Tell him no! Leave area to safer area. Find security or call Police if you are concerned. Wait till person is gone.
CASE EXAMPLE : You open your trunk to get your groceries in your apt garage. You see a male coming from around your vehicle offering to help. He tells you he is safe and you can trust him. What do you do
6. WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE IN A BAD SITUATION If abducted, REACT IMMEDIATELY. If he attempts to move you to another location: DO NOT LET HIM. FIGHT, RUN, DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO GET AWAY. EVEN IF HE THREATENS TO HARM YOU. FIGHT ANYWAY. If you are forced to drive, crash your car into something. Attempt while driving under 10-15mph. If he is driving, find the right time and gouge his eyes. He must watch the road. When he reacts, get out. Even if the car is moving. Almost all abductions that end in a secondary location never end up positive. You must do all you can to avoid going to this other location. Even risking injury to your body
CASE EXAMPLE : You are forced to drive your vehicle. Attacker threatens harm if you do not comply. What do you do?
7. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DISTANCE WHEN WALKING PAST STRANGERS ON THE STREET OR IN DARK ALLEYS. Two arms length distance will keep you out of harms way from grabbing you or hitting you. Any closer and you are at risk. Walk with head up, phone with 911 ready, confident steady walk, do not avoid looking at person when walking by. Eye contact shows confidence and human connection. May reduce risk of attack. Carry a small flashlight with you, carry in your hand. If you find someone is following you or chasing you, scream Fire or Police not Help . Yelling fire/Police tends to get attention.
CASE EXAMPLE: You leave a bar to go to your vehicle, it is dark as you walk down the side street. You see several males near your car. What do you do?
8. GET A CELL PHONE You can still dial 911 with a cell phone that does not have a plan. If cost is an issue. You can purchase pre-paid cell phones that have minimal start up cost.
CASE EXAMPLE: You are lost in an area known for crime. You have a cell phone with you. What do you do?
9. IF YOUR CAR BREAKSDOWN Lock your card doors and call for assistance on your cell phone. In winter, keep blanket, boots, and flashlight in your car. Stay with your vehicle. If someone approaches you to help, unless it is another female, or a friend, co-worker, advise the person to call 911. If you have already called let them know help is on the way. Do not role down the window, if you must, roll the window down a crack to speak to individual.
Car is down, you are on a rural road. A vehicle stops and male approaches your car. What do you do? CASE EXAMPLE:
10. DEFENSE TO ESCAPE The eyes are the most vulnerable part of body. Poke the eyes with fingertips, hard. (This may be your only chance) Strike the knee hard with your feet. (Again, may have only one chance ) Do with force and confidence. Get away, Run! Find an obstacle, such as a parked car, and run around it, like: (Ring around the rosy). Sounds silly but it has worked. Your last hope is getting under the car . The attacker will not be able to get you out w/o significant effort and drawing undo attention. Key: (You must practice this prior to doing it. Again, silly but effective.)
As you reach your car, someone grabs you from behind. You break away from his grip. What do you do now? CASE EXAMPLE:
11. NEVER LET YOURSELF OR ANYONE YOU KNOW BE A CLOSER BY THEMSLEVES IN THEIR JOB. Most Assaults, Robbery , occur at jobs that employ one employee in their establishment. Studies have shown that assaults are reduced 70% with two people present, 90% with three or more. There are plenty of other jobs to take that do not require working alone. Example: Tell Story
You are offered a job working nights at a convenience store. Some evenings you will be working alone. What do you do? CASE EXAMPLE:
